Notes |
- GREENVILLE - Virginia Messervy Bryson, of 214 Sandpiper Way, Swansgate, formerly of 104 Lakecrest Drive, left this life on Thursday, May 14, 2009, after a brief illness.
Born in the low country of South Carolina, Ginnie was the epitome of a southern lady and a proud Charlestonian. She appreciated the beauty of the Carolina moon, the smell of sweet jasmine, and all music, especially classical and jazz. She was known for her rendition of The Big Apple and the Jitterbug. She loved to entertain and it was nothing for her to give a dinner party for 50 people at a moments notice. She often said that she never knew who was coming to her house for dinner, so she better have a cake and coffee ready.
Ginnie received her nurses training in Charleston where she met Joe Bryson, her future husband. Together, they forged a medical career that spanned over 50 years in the Greenville community.
Ginnie believed in community involvement and volunteered in many charitable activities. She was a past member of the Medical Auxiliary of Greenville, the Gridley Club, and Northgate Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was the Health Nurse at Summit Drive Elementary and League Middle School for many years and volunteered with the Red Cross of Greenville. Where there was a need, she filled it. She and her husband were founding members of The Evangelical Institute of Greenville and she sat on the Board of Trustees at North Greenville Junior College. She was a goodwill ambassador with her husband on his trips representing the City of Greenville and the State of South Carolina.
Ginnie is survived by her children, Joe Bryson of Alabama, Virginia Dusenbury of Greenville, and Bob Bryson and his wife, Edith, of Greenville. She was blessed with nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Joseph R. Bryson; her mother, Lois Messervy; and her father, Luder Messervy.
Ginnie leaves behind to mourn her passing many friends and neighbors at Stone Lake, Swansgate and NHC Mauldin, past patients from Dr. Brysons office and extended family. Special thanks go to her wonderful caregivers from Brownings Geriatric Care in Greenville and to the many staff members of the CCICU at Greenville Memorial Medical Center who cared for her during the final days.
Visitation will be held Sunday, May 17, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to Northgate Baptist Church, 633 Summit Drive, Greenville, SC 29609.
The family will be at their respective homes.
