- Stephen J. Sheridan, Sr., 73, of Palatka, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2020 at his home following an extended illness.
He was born to Donald and Eloise Sheridan at Mary Lawson Hospital in Palatka where he grew up and attended school. Steve had worked for Hudson Pulp & Paper, and Sheridan Construction before working his way up to Chief Building Official of Putnam County and District School Board of Putnam, Building Inspector. He also taught air conditioning at the St. Augustine Vo Tech for 4 years. Throughout his career he earned various licensing achievements in plumbing, electrical, and heating & air. Steve also had personal achievements he was proud of including earning his own money and purchasing the 1st 1965 Mustang in Putnam County at the age of 19.
Steve had an extremely deep passion for aviation which began very early on as a child. He could easily be found in his room designing and building, from scratch (never from a kit), his own model airplanes. This passion led him to eventually buying airplanes and even completely designing and building his own airplane, including hand building his own prop for it. Another proud achievement was earning his solo pilot’s license in only 2 hours. Steve has kept his airplanes at Kay Larkin Airport for more than 30 years, making friends and acquaintances from all over. many of them he considered his extended family. Another daring and proud achievement of Steve’s was accomplishing a solo flight in a 1946 Aeronca from Nebraska to Florida in 2018.
He dearly enjoyed spending time with all of his friends and family. Steve was always willing to lend a helping hand. If it couldn’t be fixed, he could fix it. His friends and family fondly refer to him as “a jack of all trades and a master of many.” Soar with the angels Steve.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Eloise Sheridan.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Baggs-Sheridan, brothers, Patrick Sheridan (Theresa) and Donald Sheridan, Jr. all of Palatka, son, Stephen J. Sheridan, Jr. (Julia) of Florahome, a daughter, brothers-in-law, David Baggs (Anna), Danny Baggs, (Penny) and Terry Baggs (Chandra Osteen), 8 grandchildren, one great-grandson, caregiver, Lisanne Denney as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2:00 on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka with Bro. A.O Johns, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Bostwick Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday beginning at 1:00 p.m. until time of service.
