- Edgar “Ed” Combest, Jr., 82 of Lake City, passed away on Monday, January 14, 2019 at the Haven Suwannee Valley Hospice Care Center.
He was born in Blue Ridge, Texas to the late Edgar Combest, Sr. and Maxie Bailey Combest.
Mr. Combest had made his home in Lake City since 1974 having moved here following his retirement from the United States Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. He received many military metals and ribbons including the Naval Good Conduct, Commendation and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals. He then worked as an instructor at the Lake City Community College retiring in 1999. Ed was instrumental in making the Golf Course Mechanics an internationally known program with support from industry leaders. Some recognition includes awarding of Professor Emeritus from LCCC and first recipient of Edwin Budding Award from the golf industry.
Mr. Combest was a Christian and active member of Hopeful Baptist Church. Ed generously served at Hopeful teaching all ages of Sunday School and Royal Ambassador Boys, he also served on many committees including the church cemetery board. He enjoyed his cows, working on the farm, small engines and farm equipment, traveling and helping people.
Mr. Combest was preceded in death by his first wife, Leola Christine Dicks Combest in 2001; four brothers, J.B. Combest, James Ray “Pete” Combest, Billy Combest and Otha “Rooster” Combest; and two sisters, Johnnie Combest Wallace and Francis Combest “Bugs” Parker.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Baker Combest, Lake City; one son, Chad Combest (Angie), Richmond Hill, GA; two grandchildren, Jacob Combest and Kaitlyn Combest both of Richmond Hill, GA; three sisters, Elizabeth “Wiggy” Combest Parker, Betty Jo Combest Chamberlain and Edna “Faye” Combest Culwell; step children, Chad Stafford and Amy McCaughan (James) both of Lake City; step grandchildren, Kelsie Knudsen, Katie Knudsen, David Becker, Danielle McCaughan and James McCaughan all of Lake City; and one step great granddaughter, Karina Paige, Lake City.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Hopeful Baptist Church with Dr. Zeb Cook and Rev. Larry Sweat officiating. Interment will follow at Hopeful Baptist Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday evening from 5-7:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hopeful Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
