    Obituary for James Tobias

    James May Tobias (76) passed peacefully on January 23, 2010, in Charleston, SC after a brief battle with cancer. James was an 8th generation Charlestonian born on June 23, 1933, to the late Vernon Tobias and Emily Cummins.

    After graduating from Bishop England High School and the College of Charleston, Jim served in the Navy for 3 years. During his career, he was highly involved in the port development as a member of the State Ports Authority development staff and then in the city’s development as a successful commercial real estate agent. Jim served on the board of many local organizations including the World Trade Center, WORK for the homeless, and the Propeller Club. Jim’s commitment brought the Business Technology Center to Charleston which helped in the revitalization of the East-side. Jim was employed at Carolina One North Mt. Pleasant as a commercial realtor.

    Jim is survived by his wife Opal Wilkes Tobias and their children: Eve Hiott (Rick), Edwin Tobias (Blue), and Eric Tobias (Robyn); grandchildren: Tamara Trainor, James Tobias, Patrick Tobias, Matthew Tobias, and Alex McCullough; great-granddaughter Amy Trainor.

    Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 26th from 6-8pm at McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 1520 Rifle Range Rd, Mt. Pleasant, 884-3833.The funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 27th at 11am at Christ Our King Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant.

    James married Opal Soulee Wilkes on 30 Sep 1961.     Edwin James Tobias, 52 years, of Greenville SC, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2015, after a long battle with the Neurological disease MSA (Multiple System Atrophy).

    Ed was born in Charleston, SC on October 30, 1963 to James May and Opal Wilkes Tobias. After growing up as a 9th generation Charlestonian, he graduated from Bishop England high school in Charleston, and then graduated from Purdue University in Indiana, where he obtained a Computer Science Degree.

    Ed is survived by his wife, Malabar Blue Harrington Tobias, and son James Creighton Tobias and step son Alexander Blake McCullough; Mother Opal Wilkes Tobias; Two siblings Eve Marie Hiott and Eric Wilkes Tobias and Wife Robyn, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

    Ed lived a full life, and was known for his ever present smile, and unwavering patience.

    The funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m., on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church.
