    Major (Ret.) Charles Daniel "Dan" Bowdoin Jr., 72, of Athens, passed away Friday, January 27, 2017 at St. Mary's Hospital surrounded by his family. Major Bowdoin was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family as well as being an active deacon and choir member at Beech Haven Baptist Church.

    A native of Atlanta, Major (Ret.) Bowdoin was the son of the late Dr. Charles Daniel Bowdoin Sr. and Mary Harley Bowdoin. He was a 1962 graduate from Henry Grady High School where he was a member of the JROTC. He earned a Bachelor's degree from North Georgia College while serving as a member of Brigade Staff of the Cadet Corps. Upon graduation in 1966, he was recognized as a Distinguished Military Graduate and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, Regular Army in the Armor Branch. He served two tours in Vietnam, earning a Purple Heart for wounds received in action in 1967. He had a distinguished military career serving three tours in the Pentagon assigned to the Officer of the Secretary of Defense, the Office of the Army Chief of Staff for Intelligence, and the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, retiring from the United States Army in 1984. He graduated from the Naval War College in 1984 with Highest Distinction. Among his multiple service awards were three Bronze Stars, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palms. He earned a Master's in Systems Management from the University of Southern California (1975) and a Master's in Public Health from the University of South Florida (1989). Known as "Dan the Meal Plan Man," he was a beloved member of the Food Services Department at the University of Georgia, retiring in 2014.

    Major (Ret.) Bowdoin is survived by his wife of 44 years, Carol Tull Bowdoin; daughter, Elizabeth Marie "Libby" Bowdoin; son, David Parker Bowdoin (Beth); sister, Karen Bowdoin Burnette (Steve); and grandchildren, Andrew and Madison Fouch.
