Doris Milton Mitchell, of Jasper, FL. passed away on June 7, 2017 at Haven Hospice Suwannee Valley Care Center in Lake City, FL. at the age of 89.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church in Jasper, FL. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband Joe C. Mitchell on January 26th of this year and she just did not seem to have the will to go on without him after spending 66 years of marriage together.
Doris was born in Hamilton County on April 11, 1928 to the late Jesse James Milton and Florence Johnson Milton. She married Joe in October of 1950. Doris worked for many years for the Agricultural Conservation and Stabilization Services (ASCS) office in Hamilton County in the capacity of County Director. She worked as liaison between the federal government and the local farmers. She and Joe retired about two years apart and after some adjustment to being with each other full time, Doris settled in quite nicely to being “Nannie”. With three grandsons and many, many baseball games they loaded up the lawn chairs and headed out to most every game they could catch. When she was not being Nannie, she could be counted on to be on the N, B & D neighborhood watch. That would be the Nell Rhoden, Billie Payne and Doris Mitchell “self-appointed” neighborhood watch. With Nell’s connection to the Sheriff’s Department, a scanner between them and Doris living across from the funeral home they were usually in the “Know” about anything that was happening in Jasper. Doris was an active member of the Jasper First Presbyterian Church as long as her health permitted.
Doris will be missed by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing her over the years. She was indeed a good neighbor and friend.
Survivors include her son and his wife, Rex and Karen Mitchell of Jasper; her daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Ron Snyder of Soperton, GA.; three grandsons and their wives, Ryan Mitchell (Elizabeth), Brandon Snyder (Heather) and Patrick Mitchell (Brigitte); five great grandchildren, James Mitchell, Caroline Snyder, Jackson Snyder, Landon Snyder, Matthew Wade Mitchell and another one on the way.
The family wishes to include and thank their caregivers that were truly a blessing over the last few months, Katie Izell, Caitlyn Johnson, Laura Johnson, Rhonda Chapman, Michaela Johnson, Mary Ellen Altman and Crystal Goolsby.
