    at the Zigzag Pass, near Olangapo in the Philippine Islands.
    Born September 4, 1918, Jacksonville, FL. Graduated Lee High School, 1936, Jacksonville, FL. Enlisted March 29, 1944. Trained at Fort Knox, KY, Camp Gruber, OK (September through October, 1944). Assigned to Fort Ord, CA (November).

    Shipped out on USS General R.L. Howze (AP-134) from San Francisco on December 15, 1944 to Oro Bay, New Guinea on January 2, 1945, then on January 4, to Hollandia Bay, New Guinea, then on January 14, to Leyte Island, arriving on January 17, 1945.

    Shipped on USS Haskell (APA-117) from San Pedro Bay, Leyte, Philippines on January 26, 1945. January 29 landed at San Narciso and marched to Subic Bay. January 30, 3nd Battalion trucked to Matain, near Olangapo. Regiment committed to the clearing of the Zigzag Pass on February 3rd, where he was killed on February 5th.

    Robert Gary Shields, 64, a resident of Lake City, Florida passed away December 5, 2006 at the Shands Jacksonville Hospital.

    Funeral services for Mr. Shields will be conducted Friday, December 8, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeff Tate, officiating.

    Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Cemetery.

    The family will receive friends Thursday December 7, 2006 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

    In Lieu of flowers donations should be made to the Buck Rogers Foundation, Inc. 1756 SW. Barnett Way Lake City, Florida 32025. This foundation was written by Mr. Shields and his family wishes that all donations be sent here. The primary purpose for which this corporation was organized is to provide relief for families in distress in North Florida. Such distress may arise as a result of a death or disability in the family, loss of home or property due to fire, flood or other casualty, or similar family catastrophe.
