    Special to the Herald

Dr. Hudson John Powell Sr. left an indelible mark on Statesboro - and beyond - in his lifetime.

He was a dentist, honor graduate of Statesboro High School, magna cum laude graduate of Georgia Southern College and recipient of the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Award in 2008 and the Statesboro Rotary clubs’ Citizen of the Year award earlier this year.

He was involved in mission trips to care for people in Brazil, treated dental issues for workers during the annual Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair and volunteered to provide dental care at the Hearts & Hands Clinic for those without insurance or the means to pay.

Less than a month after he received the Citizen of the Year award, Powell died April 13 at age 59 after a battle with cancer. To ensure that his memory will live on, friends and associates of Powell’s have worked to establish the Dr. Hudson J. Powell Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will be given each year, and the recipient will be a Georgia Southern University student who is committed to becoming a dentist or a student, with some connection to Bulloch County, who is enrolled in dental school, said Katherine Jones, who served as Powell’s assistant beginning in 1980.

"We feel very strongly about this variation because of how committed Dr. Powell was in encouraging those considering dentistry," Jones said. "One of the ways he expressed his interest was what we call ‘shadowing,’ which permitted a student to observe the many procedures Dr. Powell initiated each day. So often, he would receive a note of thanks and appreciation from those he influenced and were just beginning their own practice."

Clyde Redding, a patient and friend of Powell’s, is leading the campaign to establish the scholarship.

"We want him never to be forgotten," Redding said. "The life he lived as a dentist, the manner of caring which he provided each of his patients, beginning in 1979. I speak of Dr. Hudson Powell, my dentist, my friend.
"He was such a positive influence as a dentist, a friend to many," he continued. "As a husband, dad and granddad, he brought a Christian awareness to his home life and to his many friends and professional associates. And though he has gone on, so many who knew this wonderful individual want to design a memorial award which will keep his name alive for years to come."

The Powell Scholarship Committee will reach out to those in the many communities who knew him professionally or personally. This will be the only direct campaign conducted, but that initial funding will be added to "each fall when we host an annual golf tournament in honor of Hudson," Redding said.

According to Redding and Jones, the outreach campaign will include contacts through letters, social media - specifically, Facebook and Twitter - and personal visits.

"We are going to do our very best in giving everyone who knew Hudson an opportunity to invest, thus allowing future generations to come to know his story of caring and giving," Redding said.

Anyone interested in contributing to the fund is asked to make checks payable to "Dr. Hudson J Powell, Sr. Memorial Scholarship, Inc." and mail them to P.O. Box 2130, Statesboro, GA 30459.
