He was born in Lamar, a son of the late Tilman and Mamie Jordan Wilkes. He was a retired quality controller from A-Q Mills in Timmonsville. He was the widower of Roberta Hill Wilkes.

Survivors include a son, Earl Wilkes and his wife, Beverly, of Florence; a daughter, Marilyn Grainger and her husband, Tommie, of Conway; three brothers, Dawson J. Wilkes of Florence, Dillon L. Wilkes of Timmonsville and Exley Wilkes of Lamar; a sister, Zelta Witherspoon of Lamar; four grandchildren, Debbie Wilkes, Tony Grainger, Donna W. Thomas and Alisa Ridout; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob Ridout and Piper Thomas.

The funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home in Florence. Interment will be in Byrd Cemetery in Timmonsville.

DARLINGTON - Funeral services for Dawson Jordan Wilkes, 86, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at First Baptist Church with interment following in Lamar Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Mr. Wilkes died Wednesday, Feb. 12, at his home. He was born in Darlington County, son of the late Tilmon Earl and Mamie Jordan Wilkes. He was married to the late Ila Mae Brown Wilkes, his wife of 63 years. He served his country with the United States Army, the Navy and the Army Reserve. Mr. Wilkes retired after 36 years as an engineer with the S.C. Department of Transportation. He was a member of the VFW, the Vance Hardin Sunday School Class and member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his son, the Rev. Larry W. (Christine) Wilkes of Edna, Kan.; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dillon Wilkes of Timmonsville, and Exley Wilkes of Lamar; also his sister, Mrs. Ted Zelda Witherspoon of Lamar.

DILLON LANSING WILKES

Dillon Lansing Wilkes TIMMONSVILLE - Dillon L. Wilkes passed away peacefully February 23, 2012 after a long and productive life of more than 92 years. He was born on April 12, 1919, in Lamar, SC, to the late Tillman Earl Wilkes and Mamie Jordan Wilkes.

Funeral services will be conducted at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012, with visitation at 2:00 pm.

Interment will follow at Lake Swamp Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 1800 Second Loop Road, Florence, SC 29501.

He was one of ten children, and he had many wonderful memories of growing up on the farm, competing and playing with his seven brothers and enjoying supportive and loving relationships with his two sisters. As a young man, he worked as a surveyor for Darlington County and for Jones Construction Company of Charlotte, NC, constructing numerous facilities in and around the Panama Canal.

He then was drafted and served 50 months with the 36th Infantry Division, US Army during World War II, helping first to organize crews and construct barracks in many locations, including Fort Jackson, and then serving as an artillery mechanic, keeping his unit's weapons working safely. He had many stories of situations in the midst of battle when he would have to go to the front line and repair jammed weapons. Throughout his life, he was humbled by memories of being under fire with his fellow soldiers in foxholes across Europe and North Africa, and when the firing ceased, discovering that he was the sole survivor. For his meritorious service, he was awarded the Legion of Merit.

After the war, he began his primary career with State Farm Insurance as an Agent in Florence, SC for more than 30 years, building his agency from two policyholders to several thousand by the time that he retired at the age of 60. He served for many years on the President's Advisory Council, and took pride in his role in convincing State Farm to hire women as Agents. He was active in the Florence Civitan Club, and as a volunteer for the Red Cross. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Florence, SC, where he served as an usher and a Sunday School Teacher for teenage boys. After retirement and a move to the Lake Swamp Community where he grew up, he joined Lake Swamp Baptist Church.

Dillon loved people, and he loved construction projects of all kinds. Nothing made him happier than to discover a problem that he could solve by building something useful---sometimes cabinets or bookshelves for a friend or relative, other times a deck or outbuilding for someone's new home. He also prided himself in the fact that he lacked formal training in construction but could competently design a building from plans quickly drawn on a brown paper bag. The home he built after his retirement with the help of his late wife Fern was a great source of pleasure to him.

He was blessed by the love of two wonderful women: the late Fern Weaver Wilkes, who died in 1997 after 51 years of marriage, and Mary Howell Wilkes, with whom he shared the last five and a half years. Mary shared good times as well as troubling ones as he battled dementia. Her loving support and patience was a final gift to him and to his family. Her devotion made it possible for him to be at home and have the kind of life he loved until the very end of his life.

Dillon is survived by his wife, Mary Howell Wilkes of the home; daughter, Karen Wilkes Gainey, (husband C. Bryan Gainey) of Moore, SC; granddaughter, Ashley Gainey Ellington (husband John B. Ellington) of Eden, NC; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin Ellington, Grace-Anne Ellington, and Simon Ellington, all of Eden, NC; one brother, Exley A. Wilkes, of Florence, SC; two step-children, Lois Howell Thomas of Lamar, SC, and Terry Howell, of Lamar, SC; and a cherished extended family of nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grand-nieces, and cousins.

Dillon was preceded in death by brothers Derry M. Wilkes of McColl, SC; Atha R. Wilkes of Garden City, SC; Trellis C. Wilkes of Columbia, SC; Dawson J. Wilkes of Darlington, SC; Kendrick E. Wilkes of Florence, SC; and T. Edwin Wilkes of Lamar, SC; and sisters, Sue Delle Younce of Columbia, GA; and Zelta Witherspoon of Lamar, SC.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Layton Anderson Funeral Home at 3:00 pm on Saturday, with visitation at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Lake Swamp Cemetery. Mrs. Ada Lee Wilkes Blackmon passed away after a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. A graveside service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Grove Hill Cemetery in Darlington, South Carolina. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Belk Funeral home in Darlington.

Born November 25, 1944 in Scotland County, North Carolina, Ada or Ada Lee to those who knew her as a child, was the daughter of the late Deery Marlin Wilkes, Sr. and Ethel Lee Wilkes. Raised in McColl, South Carolina Mrs. Blackmon was a proud graduate of McColl High School and King's College in Charlotte, North Carolina. After graduating from college she moved to Darlington where she met her husband of forty-eight years, Heyward Nelson Blackmon, Sr. Mrs. Blackmon worked for Wilson Senior Care and its predecessors for over forty years. Known for her dedication and hard work Mrs. Blackmon often went above and beyond to help the residence that had little money and no family have the funerals that they deserved. She would work with the local funeral homes to insure they would leave this world with the dignity that everyone deserves.

Mrs. Blackmon enjoyed spending time with her family and every Sunday afternoon she could be found seated at her dining table laden with steaming, homemade dishes humbly serving her husband and children. Known for her fabulous macaroni and cheese she would often claim that she really did not know how to cook, a claim that was debunked each Sunday by the cleaned plates and satisfied smiles around the table.

Each summer since she was a child Mrs. Blackmon enjoyed spending time at White Lake, North Carolina. It was a tradition that she maintained until her health no longer allowed.

Mrs. Blackmon was predeceased by her parents as well as her brothers, Keith B. Wilkes of Prosperity, South Carolina and Deery M. Wilkes, Jr. of McColl.

She is survived by her devoted and loving husband Heyward as well as her two sons, Heyward Nelson Blackmon, Jr. and his wife GeorgeAnne of Darlington and Harry Arthur (Art) Blackmon, II also of Darlington. Mrs. Blackmon is survived by one granddaughter of whom she was most proud, Sarah Elizabeth Louise Blackmon.

HUNT, Sue D. 78, of Apollo Beach, died on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014.

Born in 1935 in San Diego, CA, Sue was beloved by all who knew her. She had many friends who cared about her and loved her and for whom she felt the same. She was a gracious and a kind lady, who was always ready to smile her beautiful smile. Sue graduated from college with a BA in 1958 from The College of Notre Dame of Maryland (now Notre Dame of Maryland University).

Sue was also the top saleswoman in the field of pharmaceutical sales for many years. Having retired in 1999, Sue's company gave her a squirming, 8 week-old Black Labrador puppy Molly -- as a retirement gift. Molly re-awakened Sue's love for dogs. Her love (and her endless supply of doggie biscuits) made all the dogs in the neighborhood wait impatiently to see Sue on her long morning walks. Sue also loved her church -- Saint Anne Catholic Church of Ruskin -- very much, rejoicing in its new building.

Sue is preceded in death by her father and mother, Trellis and Grace Wilkes, and her husband, Jack.

She is survived by her two children, Patty (Draza) and Tim (Christine); her brothers and sister, Craig (Zeda), Trellise (Pat), and Mike (Jane); her brother-in-law, Jim (Margee); and her many nieces and nephews.

We shall miss Sue terribly but we take solace in knowing that she is in Heaven, smiling her lovely smile.

Services will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, at 10am, at Saint Anne Catholic Church, Ruskin.

FLORENCE -- Kendrick Earl Wilkes, Jr. 78, formerly of Timmonsville, died at hisresidence on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014 after an extended illness.

At the corner of Hwy 76 and Sally Hill Rd., Earl was the smiling face and friend of the many patrons that came through the doors of Wilkes Grocery for 34 years before retiring.

He was a member of The Life Church of Florence.

Laurinburg woman killed in wreck

A staff report

LAURINBURG - A woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday morning about two miles south of Laurinburg, the Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported on Hasty Road at 12:01 a.m., according to a report filed by Trooper R.C. Carlyle.

Lisa Wilkes Vallandingham , 49, of McQueen Road in Laurinburg, was traveling north on Hasty Road when her vehicle ran off the side of the road and hit a mailbox, the report said.

The vehicle skidded back onto the road, ran off the left side and overturned, the report said.

Vallandingham, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle, the report said.

She was pronounced dead at Scotland Memorial Hospital.

Lisa Wilkes Vallandingham, 49, died Tuesday, March 9, 2010.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Midway Presbyterian Church officiated by Dr. Rodger Decker. Burial will follow in Caledonia Cemetery.

She is survived by three sons, Adam Vallandingham and Jacob Rowell Vallandingham of Laurinburg, and Earl Vallandingham, III of Florida; a daughter, Amy Vallandingham of Laurinburg; her mother, Margaret McLean Wilkes of Laurinburg; two brothers, Warren Wilkes of Laurinburg and Jeff Wilkes of Orange Park, FL; a sister, Lona Buhannon of Jasper, TX; two grandchildren, Joy Kay Vallandingham and Adam James Vallandingham.

She was born July 12, 1960 in Scotland County and was also a daughter of the late A. R. Wilkes and widow of the late Earl Vallandingham. For many years she worked in the family poultry business.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Friday at the McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium.
