    COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Helen Cassells Wilkes will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with visitation following.

    Mrs. Wilkes, wife of the late John Cornelia Wilkes, died May 3, 2010. Born May 8, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Margaret Hefner Cassells. She attended Rosewood Baptist Church.

    Surviving are her daughter, Mary Burgess (Hugh), Columbia; son-in-law, John Bowles, Lexington; grandchild, Kara Glenn (Ben), Columbia; brother, Robert Cassells; sister, Bernice Chaney, both of Monroe, N.C.; great-grandson, Cole Glenn. She was predeceased by daughter, Barbara Bowles; four brothers; one sister.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Friendship Sunday School Class of Rosewood Baptist Church, 2901 Rosewood Drive, Columbia, SC 29205.

    Head-on crash kills Lexington woman

    A 61-year-old Lexington woman died in a head-on collision Thursday afternoon in Lexington County.

    The woman, identified by county Coroner Harry Harman as Barbara Wilkes Bowles, was driving east on Millstream Road around 1:23 p.m., when her vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic near Hickory Hill Road.

    The Honda struck a Chevrolet pickup, S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Josef Robinson said. The pickup's driver, Jonathan Coburn, 25, of South Congaree, and passenger Andrew Webber, 20, of Lexington County, were uninjured. Both wore seat belts.

    Bowles, who also was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, Robinson said.

    Barbara Wilkes Bowles

    COLUMBIA Memorial service for Barbara Wilkes Bowles, 62, will be held Sunday, May 17, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

    Mrs. Bowles died Thursday, May 14, 2009. Born in Chester, S.C., she was a daughter of Helen Cassells Wilkes and the late John C. Wilkes, Jr. Mrs. Bowles graduated from the University of South Carolina, College of Pharmacy. She retired as a pharmacist from the State Department of Mental Health following 35 years of service. She was a devoted daughter, wife, sister, aunt and friend.

    Surviving are her husband of 25 years, John B. Bowles; mother; sister and brother-in-law, Mary W. and D. Hugh Burgess; nieces, Kara Glenn and her husband, Ben, all of Columbia, Elisabeth Beller and her husband, Scott of Arlington, Va. and Susan Dexter of Huntington Beach, Calif.; sister-in-law, Cornelia Dexter and her husband, Benson of Williamsburg, Va.; great-nephew, Cole Glenn; and great-niece, Morgan Beller.

    Mrs. Burgess died Thursday, May 31, 2012. Born in Chester, she was a daughter of the late John Cornellia and Helen Cassells Wilkes. She was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and the Solid Rock "Young Adult" Sunday School Class.

    Following her retirement from Constan, Inc. as Office Manager many years ago, she devoted her time to her family, especially her grandchildren.

    Surviving are her beloved husband of 42 years, Hugh Burgess; daughter and son-in-law, Kara and Ben Glenn; grandchildren, Cole and Juliet Glenn; brother-in-law, John (Ann) Bowles of Columbia and numerous other relatives.

    In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by an infant son and sister, Barbara Wilkes Bowles.

    The family wishes to thank Dr. S. Terry Smith and nurses, Kathy and Mary, for their compassion and care shown to Mary, as well as, her beloved friends, Marian Hornsby, Catherine Matthews and Cathy Brown.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to South Carolina Ovarian Cancer Foundation, Riverbanks Region Chapter, 602 Meeting Street, West Columbia SC 29169.
