    Charles K. Wilkes, Sr. (Charlie) died Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at ARMC after an extended illness. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Woodrow Richardson at Sunset Memory Gardens on Sunday, October 24 at 2:30 PM. There will be no calling hours at the George Funeral Homes Southside Chapel 3175 Whiskey Rd., Aiken.

    Charlie was born on May 7, 1931 in Phoenix, South Carolina, the son of the late Reverend Alston, founder of the Alston Wilkes Society, and Mrs. Georgianna Richardson Wilkes. Charlie attended Wofford College and served in the South Carolina National Guard for seven years. He was active in both the Dixie Youth and Pony League baseball programs in Aiken. He was a founding member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and taught the adult Sunday school class for over 40 years.

    He was retired from E & I at DuPont at the Savannah River Site after 45 years. For the last six years he resided at Mattie C. Hall where he enjoyed the company of new friends and staff. He is preceded in death by his wife Nancy (Gerrie) Wilkes, daughter Nancy, and brother Alston. He is survived by his sons Charles K. Wilkes, Jr. (wife Donna) and Bryan Mark Wilkes both of Aiken and his sisters Mary Ann Spangler of Columbia and Miriam Trimarchi of Florida. Pallbearers will be Rodney Spangler, Bill Jeffords, Wayne Lowery, Steven Reynolds, Marshall Sanders, and Don Hill.

    The family wishes to thank those individuals who took the time over the last six years to comfort Charlie in his time of need. He will be sorely missed and remembered by the ones he left behind. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Aiken SPCA, 401 Wire Road, Aiken, SC 29801, or the Eden Alternative School at Mattie C. Hall, P.O. Box 475, Aiken, SC 29801
