    Notes:

    Died:
Catherine Ann Wilkes Williams, obituary On October 22, 2019, heaven opened wide to welcome Catherine Ann Williams home to her loving Lord and Savior at the age of 79 following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

1 Corinthians 2:9, “But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.’” Even when this cruel disease robbed Catherine of all that was familiar, she continued to reach to her faith. 2 Timothy 4:7, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Catherine’s warm acceptance of all people, her generosity of spirit, and her devotion to family and friends will be greatly missed by the many who were privileged to know her.

She is survived by daughter Tammy Williams of Pinebluff, N.C.; daughter Cheryl Williams and husband Dave Stewart of Crumpler, N.C.; son Jim Williams and wife Amy Williams of Charlotte, N.C.; granddaughter Maegan Caliri, husband Matt Bean, and their son Jack Eisenhower Bean of Carthage, N.C.; granddaughter Alexis Williams of Greensboro, N.C.; grandson Airman First Class Jonah Caliri, USAF, and wife Colleen Ford Caliri of Fairchild AFB, Spokane, Wash.; and granddaughter Avery Williams of Columbia, S.C.

While Catherine had been in declining health for some years, she retained her quiet resolution and subtle sense of humor. Catherine Ann Wilkes was born at Wagram in Scotland County, N.C., on August 24, 1940, the only daughter of Ina Mae Cook Wilkes and D. P. Wilkes. She had two brothers: Thomas Wilkes, a few years older, who joined the United States Navy, married Louise and had three children, and lived in New London, Conn.; and Douglas Wilkes, a few years younger than Catherine, who served in the United States Marine Corps before becoming an electrician, married JoAnne, and lived in Moore County, N.C., in Aberdeen. Both brothers predeceased their sister.

Catherine grew up in Aberdeen, where her mother owned and ran the renowned Ina Mae’s Diner on South Street. Catherine shared fond memories of helping her mother in the cafeteria kitchen and talking with the many and varied patrons in the dining room. She graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1958, and in 1963 married Sugie Williams at Beulah Hill Baptist Church in Pinehurst, Moore County. Sugie came from Manly, near Southern Pines, the son of Herbert and Ruthie Williams, originally of Bensalem near Eagle Springs in the west of Moore County. At the time of their wedding, however, Sugie was living and training horses in West Palm Beach, Fla., which is where the newlyweds made their first home together. After the birth of their second daughter, Sugie and Catherine moved back to Manly in the late 1960s, building a house on Petty Street next door to his parents’ home. Over the years, a number of Sugie’s siblings built houses close by, and that area of Manly became known as the “Williams compound, ” a happy place full of good memories for the numerous children and adults of the extended Williams family who lived there. Sugie and Catherine were devoted, long-term members of both the Beulah Hill Baptist Church and the Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen. For several years, Catherine conducted Vacation Bible School at Beulah Hill as well as directing multiple Christmas programs at the church, activities she was always very proud of. In her professional life, she was the insurance and safety officer at Proctor Silex in Southern Pines and later worked in the admissions department of First Health of the Carolinas in Pinehurst. Sugie and Catherine left Manly in 2012, ultimately settling in North Wilkesboro, where Sugie died on July 8, 2017, aged 82. Catherine continued to reside there until she moved to Matthews, N.C., in the last weeks of her life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

There will be a memorial service for Catherine at Bethesda Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen at 2 P.M. on Sunday, October 27.

Services entrusted to Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines.
