CURRIE - Leslie Haywood Caison Sr., 79, died Nov. 2, 1992, at Guardian Care in Burgaw.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Moores Creek Baptist Church, of which he was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A native of Pender County, he was a retired farmer, a member of Atkinson Lodge 612 AF&AM and a deacon at his church.

Surviving are wife, Emma Walker Caison; sons, Leslie H. Caison Jr. of Greensboro, Robert E. "Bobby" Caison of Currie; daughter, Peggy C. McCormick of Currie; sisters, Elizabeth Alexander of Wilmington, Alberta Costin of Watha; five grandchildren.

The family will be at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Burgaw 6-8 tonight.

Bobby Duran James, age 74, of Milton, Florida and formerly of Cypress Creek Community in North Carolina left this earthly life for his eternal rest on Sunday, April 24, 2016.

He was born December 11, 1941 in Duplin County, North Carolina and was the son of the late Robert E. and Nolie Caison James. He was also predeceased by his sister, Alene J. Rich of Wallace, NC.

Mr. James proudly served his country in the US Navy for 21 years and was a member of Cypress Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

Surviving to cherish his memory is his best friend and wife of 27 years, Barbara Turner James of the home; son, Robert Andrew James of Atlanta, Georgia; step children, Robert N. Olson and wife, Cherylnn of Milton, Florida and Sheila R. Sabogal and husband, Carlos, of Milton, Florida and John C. Olson of Atlanta, Georgia.

Bobby was a devoted husband and caring father who loved his family dearly. He found great joy in the simplest of things, but his greatest joy was spending time with those he loved. Bobby enjoyed farming and being outdoors in God’s beautiful creation as long as his health permitted. Being a man of compassion and kindness, he was always ready to lend a helping hand to neighbors, friends and family. He had a deep, private relationship with God and demonstrated his faith in the way he lived his life. A man of great integrity, Bobby James will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Memorial service will be held at 4:00pm on Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Lewis Funeral Home, Milton, Florida. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:00 pm, one hour prior the service at Lewis Funeral Home.

Funeral service in North Carolina will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Cypress Creek Primitive Baptist Church (2887 Lightwood Bridge Road, Wallace, NC 28466). Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Monday evening at the church.

WILMINGTON - Edward Franklin Newton, 80, formerly of Pender County, died Sunday, February 16, at his residence.

Mr. Newton was born February 1, 1923, in Pender County. He was the son of the late James C. and Kataie Caison Newton. He was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Anita Quick.

He was a member of Moore's Creek Baptist Church and was a retired farmer. He was Navy veteran of World War II.

The funeral service was held Wednesday at 11 a. m. at Moore's Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Philip Eakins officiating. Burial was in Newton Family Cemetery.

Mr. Newton is survived by his wife, Cynthia M. Newton; two daughters, Catherine Minard of Greenville and Gina Herring of Burgaw; a stepson, Steven Ingram of Orange Park, Fl.; a brother, James C. "Neal" Newton of Burgaw; two sisters, Irene Normann of White Lake, Bettie Rivenbark of Wallace, and Emily Harris of Whiteville; and six grandchildren, Leslie Minard, Casey Minard, Nicholas Herring, Kimberly Herring, Kara Ward, and Devon Ingram.

MRS. FLORENCE NEWTON JOHNSON

WATHA -- Mrs. Florence Newton Johnson, age 60, of Route 1, Watha, died Friday morning in New Hanover Memorial Hospital in Wilmington after a lingering illness.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Edgerton Funeral Chapel in Wallace conducted by Rev. James Parson and Rev. Phillip Eakins. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park near Watha.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by two sons, Eugene Carr and Monroe G. Carr, Jr., both of Wilmington; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Margie Pierce of Wilmington and Mrs. George (Janet) Pusey of Ivanhoe; one stepson, Hugh Johnson of Wallace; her mother, Mrs. Katie Newton of Currie; four sisters, Mrs. Irene Norman of Elizabethtown, Mrs. Emily Kay Harris of Whiteville, Mrs. Margaret Powers of Maple Hill, and Mrs. Betty Mae Rivenbark of Wallace; four brothers, Neil Newton and Sebil Newton, both of Burgaw, Franklin Newton and Elbert Newton, both of Currie; four stepgrandchildren.

A native of Pender County, Mrs. Johnson was the daughter of Mrs. Katie Caison Newton and the late Cornelius Newton. She was the widow of the late Roger Harper Johnson and was a member of the Willard Baptist Church.

Casketbearers will be, Evans Pridgen, James F. Pridgen, James S. Newton Jr., Elbert S. Newton Jr., Steve Rivenbark, and Gregory Newton. Honorary bearers will be, E. J. Pridgen, John Ed Newton, Richad Pridgen, Sidney Harris and Glenn Rivenbark.

WHITE LAKE - Irene Newton Normann, 79, of White Lake died Monday, June 30, 2014 at her home. She was born Oct. 26, 1934 in Pender County, the daughter of the late James C. and Katie Caison Newton. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Charlotte Glover; three sisters, Mary Pridgen, Maggie Powers and Florence Johnson; and four brothers, Sivey Newton, Elbert Newton Sr., Franklin Newton and John Ed Newton.

She graduated from St. Petersburg Junior College in Florida and worked for many years as a Registered Nurse. She was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints - Whiteville Branch.

Final rites will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 6 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Burgaw Chapel, with Elder Steve Williams officiating. Private burial will be in the Newton Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 6 following the funeral service at the funeral home.

She is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Normann Pique; two sisters, Betty Mae Rivenbark and Emily Kay Harris; one brother, Neal Newton; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

James Cornelius “Neal” Newton, Jr., age 82, of Burgaw passed gently into the glory of our Lord and Savior’s care on Monday, December 16, 2019 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCare Center.

He was born May 3, 1937 in Pender County, one of ten children born to James Cornelius Newton, Sr. and Katie Caison Newton. In addition to his parents Neal was preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Pridgen, Maggie Powers, Florence Johnson, Irene Normann, Sivey, Elbert Sr., Franklin, and John Ed Newton.

Neal is survived by his loving and devoted family: wife of 64 years, Sue Anders Newton; children, Becky Lane (Phil) of Burgaw, Gregg Newton (Drenda) of Southern Pines, and Kelly Powers (Eddie) of Monroe; grandchildren, Adam Lane, Joshua Lane (Brittany), Daniel Lane, Heather Kosem (Nico), Courtney Durham (Chandler), Micah Powers (Lyndsey), and Katie Deese (Anthony); great grandchildren, Naomi Kosem and Samuel Deese; sisters, Bettie Mae Rivenbark and Emily Kay Harris; many extended family and dear friends.

Neal was retired as a safety officer with the NCDOT. Following his career with NCDOT, Neal embarked on a second career which was for the love of people, working with Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home for 15 years. Being instrumental in the formation of Pender County Rescue Squad, Neal was a volunteer for 13 years. For many years, Neal served as Sunday school teacher, deacon and in many other capacities at Moores Creek Baptist Church.

Neal was a Godly, Christian man and a joy to know. He was known for his wisdom, generosity, love of laughter, and for his great devotion to his family. His departure from this earth leaves an empty place in our family circle and in our hearts.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home in Burgaw.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Moores Creek Baptist Church with The Rev. Roger Barnes, The Rev. Gregg Newton and The Rev. Eddie Powers conducting the service.

Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park.

When his health permitted, he was always ready to lend a helping hand to family, neighbors and friends. Earl enjoyed woodworking which included building birdhouses and he loved going to the mountains. He was a sharp and knowledgeable man who loved people and was loved in return. Earl will surely be missed but cherished memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Avie Mae Gurganious English, age 76, of Wallace went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, September 15, 2007 from Brian Center Health and Rehab.

She was born August 15, 1931 in Pender County and was the daughter of the late Tim and Molly Caison Gurganious. She was also predeceased by her husband, Homer Ray English.

Avie was a member of Wallace Pentecostal Holiness Church where she taught Sunday school, worked diligently in Vacation Bible Schools and was a great prayer warrior. Being a talented artist, writer and crafter, Avie enriched the community in which she lived. Generously she shared with others her love, talents, knowledge, humor and abilities. She will be greatly missed, but more importantly heaven has gained a faithful new angel on this day.

Surviving are her loving son, Michael Ray English of Wallace; sisters, Doris Murray of Wallace, Nancy Locklear and husband, Eartle of Castle Hayne; brother, Earl Gurganious and wife, Mildred of Wallace and numerous nieces, nephews and special friends that loved and helped Avie through her illness.

Funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at Wallace Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Wayne Keene officiating.

Burial will follow in Cavenaugh Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Elmer Hunt, Billy Strickland, Tim Whaley, Milton Wells, Ethan Carter, and Richard Gurganious.

Honorary casketbearer will be Donnie Mobley.

The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday evening at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home, Wallace and other times at the home of Earl and Mildred Gurganious.

Nancy Jane Locklear, 81, of Castle Hayne, NC, died Thursday, July 17, 2014 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

She was born on June 17, 1933, the daughter of the late Timothy and Molly Gurganious. Also remembered is her daughter, Brenda Pierce and a brother Earl Gurganious, both of who preceded her in death.

Nancy was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was an exceptional friend to all who knew her and will be remembered for her love of life, her laughter and the way she enjoyed telling a good joke.

Surviving is her husband, Eartle Locklear; a son, Timothy Locklear; two grandsons, Timothy Earl Locklear and Johnny Locklear; brother-in-law, Jerell Locklear and wife Linda; sister-in-law, Mildred Gurganious; nephew, Alan Locklear; niece Linda Carroll; good friends, Angie Crapper and Richard Hale; and many other cousins, extended family and friends.

Larry Foard Caison (1936 - 2009)
After a long battle with Alzheimer's, Larry passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, with his wife of over 50 years at his side.

Larry was born in Atkinson, N.C., and was proud to serve his country for 20 years. He retired as an enlisted member of the U.S. Air Force. Afterwards, his passion was to serve the next generation with a second career as a 20-year teacher at Thomas Nelson Community College. Upon retirement, Larry blessed our local community and became a resident of Destin, Fla.

He was the eldest of three children born to the late Eli "Sonny" and Myrtle Caison. Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Lorie; and two children, Eli and Lisa; his grandchildren; and countless other friends and family that were blessed to have known him.

A delightful man who loved to fish, laugh, be with family, have fun with friends and teach, Larry's love of life was always demonstrated through his appreciation with music, dance and camaraderie. He truly was the life of the party, whether it was at the American Legion or just poker nights at the house with family and friends. Larry touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity, and maintained his trademark sense of humor all the way to the end.

Friends and family are invited for visitation on Thursday evening, Dec. 10, from 6 to 8 p.m., and a funeral service on Friday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. at McLaughlin Mortuary, 17 Chestnut Ave. S.E., Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Larry will join other heroes at his final resting place at Barrancas National Cemetery.

Larry was a true patriot and in honor of his convictions the family requests, instead of flowers, donations be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project, 7020 AC Skinner Pkwy., Suite 100, Jacksonville, FL 32256; or the Special Operation Warrior Foundation, P.O. Box 13483, Tampa, FL 33681-3483, in his name.

Carl Evans Pridgen, 77, of Wilmington passed away Friday, June 25, 2010 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Carl was born in Currie, NC on May 18, 1933 to the late Emerson Joseph Pridgen and Mary Susan Pridgen. Remembered are his wife, Veonia Skipper Pridgen and a brother E.J.Pridgen who preceded him in death.

Carl was a member of Northside Baptist Church and was retired from Atlantic Distributors after 30 years of service. He was a proud veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean War.

He is survived by three children, Charles Pridgen and wife Lori, Carla Pridgen, Keith Pridgen and wife Julie; grandchildren, Michael Pridgen, Laura Pridgen, Will Pridgen, Kyle Carlson, and Cody Carlson; brothers, Ricky Pridgen (Dana) and Jimmy Pridgen (Julia), and sister, Iris Autry (Max).

Visitation for family and friends will be 6 to 8 pm Sunday at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel.

James F. Pridgen Sr, 70, of Rocky Point, North Carolina went peacefully to his heavenly home on Monday, January 30, 2012.

He was born in Currie, North Carolina on October 3, 1941, son of the late E.J. Pridgen, Sr and Mary Newton Pridgen.

Jimmy was a member of Riley's Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and on numerous committees. He enjoyed golf and was an avid Duke fan.

He is survived by his dedicated, loving wife of 50 years, Julia H. Pridgen and two sons, Frankie (Sandi) Pridgen and Randy (Karen) Pridgen, two grandchildren, Holt and Ashtyn Pridgen, all of Rocky Point, a sister, Iris (Mack) Autry, a brother, Ricky (Dayna) Pridgen, a sister in law, Hattie Pridgen and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Evans Pridgen and E.J. Pridgen, Jr.

HAVELOCK - Charlotte Normann Glover, 55, passed peacefully from her earthly life on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at Cherry Point Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Havelock.

She was predeceased by her father, James Arneson Normann. In addition to her mother, Irene Newton Normann of White Lake.

She is survived by her husband, Gary F. Glover; daughters, Mya Harrison Cruz of White Lake, Sarah Brooke Cross of Sneads Ferry and Megan Corinne Glover of Newport; three granddaughters; sister, Cynthia Normann Pique of Cape Coral, Fla.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

CALLAWAY - Helicopters churned in a cloudless blue sky early Wednesday morning, scouring the deep woods of southeast Bay County for the wreckage of a Destin-bound plane.

By then, more than an hour had passed since Tyndall Air Force Base reported losing radio contact with a distressed pilot near the Sandy Creek area.

Larry Eli Caison, 52, was piloting a single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza G36 from North Palm Beach County General Aviation to Destin Airport, but the plane began a sudden descent from 7,900 feet at 6:46 a.m. CST, according to North Florida Flight Center of Jacksonville reports.

With the plane traveling at 155 mph, Caison called in an engine-related problem and was diverted to Sandy Creek Airpark, officials said. The plane then dropped 800 feet in three minutes before communications ceased.

Caison was found dead on the scene, only about 50 yards from a grass clearing of the airpark’s paved landing strip, at 9:01 a.m. CST, according to Capt. Ricky Ramie with the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.

“He wasn’t that far from the strip,” Ramie said. “He had about 50 yards before he made the clearing where he could’ve landed. Now, that’s tragic.”

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into the crash. NTSB reported 76 crashes of Beechcraft planes in Florida within the past decade. The crashes resulted in 36 fatalities.

BCSO and the Callaway Fire Department had crews on the ground searching for the crash site by 7:23 a.m. CST. Neither flames nor smoke gave away the plane’s location deep in the woods. BCSO could not find the aircraft until a helicopter was directly above the wreckage, Ramie said.

The Sheriff’s Office and the county’s Emergency Operations Center cut a trail through the thick woods about 200 yards east of Sandy Creek Airpark with the help of a county bulldozer.

In 15 years of living in the neighborhood next to the airpark, Frank Carpenter could recall only one other time a pilot came in for an emergency landing at Sandy Creek. An aircraft Carpenter described as an “Air Force helicopter” completed a safe landing once upon a time.

A former commercial pilot and maintenance manager of Sandy Creek Airpark, Carpenter said the 20-mile circumference of timberlands surrounding the 4,000-foot-long and 60-foot-wide Sandy Creek landing strip obscures the roads, which rule out a lot of other landing options for distressed pilots. Other roads in the area are dirt or gravel.

“We’ve known people who get into trouble and look for an open field; you look for something,” Carpenter said. “As for options, where he was at doesn’t offer much.”

Lt. Col. Larry Eli Caison, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), 52, was killed in an aircraft crash in Bay County near Panama City, Fla., on Dec. 18, 2013. He was born at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., to Larry and Lorie Caison on Oct. 30, 1961.

Lt. Col. Caison was flying from West Palm Beach to Destin, Fla., to be with his family for Christmas. En route, the single engine plane he was piloting lost power and crashed one mile short of an emergency landing attempt at Sandy Creek air field.

He is preceded in death by his father, Larry Foard Caison, in 2009. He is survived by his mother, Lorie Caison of Destin; his sister, Lisa Branham of Chesapeake, Va.; former wife, Nancy Caison, and their daughter, Loren Caison, and son, Owen Caison of Shalimar, Fla.; his niece, Jessica Bullock of Newport News, Va.; and sons, Keaton Thomasson and Dillon Thomasson of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Lt. Col. Caison is a graduate of Kecoughtan High School in Hampton, Va., in 1979 and the Virginia Military In-stitute in 1983. Lt. Col. Caison retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2006 after 23 years of service. First he was a navi-gator and then convinced the Air Force to send him to pilot training. He piloted the B-1 bomber for the Strategic Air Command and C-130 Combat Talon for the Special Operations Command. His service included duty at McCord AFB in Tacoma, Wash.; Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, Japan; Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City, S.D.; Hurlburt Field in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and the Pentagon.

Lt. Col. Caison was president of Grey Aviation, a company in Destin that he founded after retiring from the U.S. Air Force. Grey Aviation is a small company that provides airborne surveillance and special mission capability to U.S. and foreign military and other government agencies. He also founded and owned Grey Tactical Outfitters in Destin.

Lt. Col. Caison had many interests. He coached high school wrestling. He kept a healthy regimen of exercise with running and weight lifting the mainstays. He enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, traveling and a good cigar. He was a terrific pilot. Mostly he loved and enjoyed being with his family, who will miss him.

Mark Ray Caison, 56, of Currie passed peacefully away on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.

He was born December 12, 1964 in New Hanover County, the son of Carol Ann Moore and the late James Ray Caison.

Mark is survived by his sons, Daniel Caison, Joshua Caison and wife, Savannah; grandchildren, Jakoby Caison, Kinley Caison, and Adilyn Caison; brother, Timothy Caison and wife, Tammy; and nephew Josh Caison.

For seven years Mark ran his own roofing company where his hardworking attitude served him well. He never missed a day of work. He was a simple man who loved to have a good time, but most of all he treasured time spent with his family. Mark will be greatly missed by those he loved and by those who loved him in return.

Patricia “Trish” Renae Caison, age 55, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2023, at Lower Cape Fear Life Care. Trish was born on September 10, 1968, in Wilmington, NC, to her devoted parents, Chancy Rastus Caison and Patricia Evelyn Lewis Caison.

Trish’s heart was a sanctuary for all creatures, great and small. Her boundless compassion led her to rescue and care for countless animals throughout her life. She nurtured wild creatures, providing them sustenance and a safe haven. Trish found solace and joy in the presence of her furry companions, creating a haven of love and warmth.

She is survived by her loving mother, Patricia Evelyn Caison, her cherished sister, Sherrie Pope (Gene), and her dear brother, Curtis Caison (Teresa). Trish leaves behind three adoring nephews, one beloved niece, four great-nephews, and two treasured great-nieces, all of whom will carry her memory forward with love.

Trish’s circle of lifelong friends, Mrs. Baker, Bonita, and Allyson were a source of immeasurable support and companionship. She is also survived by her Aunt Vivian, Uncle Kenny, and her cousin Bobby, who shared in her joys and stood by her side through life’s journey.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to relatives and friends for the unwavering love and support they showered upon Trish during her lifetime.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Herrings Chapel United Methodist Church, 1697 Herrings Chapel Rd, Burgaw, NC 28425. Following the service, interment will take place at the church cemetery. Reverend William Pearsall will officiate.
