  1. 1.  Roger Green was born in 1611 in Norfolk, England; died after 1671 in Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

Roger Greene was an emigrant to Virginia in 1635 on board the ship "Abraham", when he was aged 24, and was therefore born around 1610/11 [J.C. Hotten, Original Lists of Persons Emigrating to America 1600-1700,Chatto & Windus, 1874].

Roger Green is considered by some genealogists to be either the father or uncle of Timothy Green. Roger Green enrolled "Sizar" (meaning he enrolled as a student at reduced fees) at St. Catherine's, Cambridge, Easter of 1631. He received his B.A. 1634--35 and his M.A. 1638, ordained a priest 9 March 1638-39. He is next noted in Nansemond County, Virginia ministering to the inhabitants there. He is credited with founding North Carolina's first settlement in July 1653 on the bank of the Roanoke River, and on the south side of the Chowan and tributary streams. The grant reads as follows: "Upon the petition of Roger Green, Clerk (title applied only to ministers of the Church of England), on behalf of himself and the inhabitants of Nansemond River, it is ordered by the present Grand Assembly, that 10,000 acres of land be granted unto 100 such persons who shall first seat (settle) on the Moratuck or Roanoke Rivers and the branches thereof---provided that such seaters settle advantageously for security...... that there be granted the said Roger Green the rights of 1,000 acres of land. (Hening I, p.380)

Reverend Roger Green returned to England where on 2 September 1661, he presented a pamphlet to the Lord and Bishop of London, entitled"Virginia's Cure", in order to show the unhappy state of the Church in Virginia and the remedy of it. He was also one who examined into the competency of all ministers of the colony. He officiated at Jamestown, and was still living in 1671. (Colonial Church in Virginia, page 246)

    Notes:

One of the founders and first settlers of Craven County was Farnifold Green (1674-1714), who came to North Carolina in 1697 from the south bank of the Potomac River, in Northumberland County, Va. where his father Timothy had settled about 1664. Timothy Green, apparently an emigrant from England, married a daughter or sister of the Rev. John Farnifold, who was one of the first trustees of the College of William and Mary. Young Farnifold’s brother Titus journeyed with him to North Carolina but left no descendants.

Farnifold Green was living in Tuscarora in 1701 and had a brother TitusGreen who settled on the north side of the Neuse prior to 1707. He alsohad a brother named James. Farnifold Green made his will in 1711 andrefered to his home as being located near Piney Point on Lower BroadCreek. In 1697 Farinfold Green starts to show up as newly arrived fromCarolina. He was born in 1674 in Northumberland County, Virginia.Farinfold Green's will, dated October 26, 1711, named his children:Thomas, John, Farniford, Janes, Elizabeth, and Jane Green. FarinfoldGreen died after February 16, 1712, he signed a petition after that date.

Farnifold Green married a lady named Hannah, but her last name is inquestion. Some say her maiden name was Kent, and some say Consolvo. Whatever her maiden name, she married a Mr. Smithwick before marring Farnifold Green in 1693. After Farnifold Green was killed in about 1714 by the Indians, his widow must have married Capt. Richard Graves, whose will is dated April 11, 1730. Richard Graves was the brother of Thomas Graves who married Sara Turner. Thomas Graves was an officer of theVirginia Company and came to Virginia in the fall of 1608.

Farnifold is listed with Nicholas Tyler & family coming to North Carolina5 July 1697. (N.C. Hist. & Gen. Reg. April 1901, p.299)

He married soon after Hannah Kent Smithwick, widow of John Smithwick of Bath County, N.C., who died testate (with a will) in 1696 naming his wife"Hanna" and daughter "Sarah" (Ann?) as his beneficiaries. John and Hannah were Quakers. (Grimes p.349)

Farnefold Green and his wife Hannah, appear frequently among the early records of Bath County (later, Beaufort). One of the earliest transactions is that of 15 August 1698 when Fornyfeild Green and wife Hannah, James Hogg and wife Ann, Thomas Pierce and wife Mary, for 40 sell to William Long (all four men are brothers-in-law) their interest of 250 acres of land of Lawrence Consolvo, deceased. v. 1707, Lord's Proprietors grant 1700 acres to Farnefold Green on the north side of the Neuse River, now Craven County, N.C.
vi. 27 June 1708, Furnifold Green and his wife Hannah, of Parish of St. Thomas in Ardel, Bath County, sell land to Christopher Dawson.
vii. 8 October 1708, Furnifold Green sells land to John Putnall witnessed by Christopher Dawson (Beaufort Co. Court Records Book I,p.103)

A little historical background to our story: Note that in 1708 Furnifold and Hanah are of Parish of St. Thomas, Bath County. St. Thomas Parish was formed in 1701 soon after the Church of England was designated as the established church of the province. It was the recipient of a collection of 1,000 books and was for a long time the only public library in North Carolina, which was unique for a frontier settlement, and became the pride of St. Thomas Church. The volumes, neatly bound in gold-tooled leather, were a combination of parochial and laymen's selections covering subjects including history, biography, natural sciences, medicine, geography, classical literature, poetry, heraldry and sports, as well as those of a religious nature.

St. Thomas Parish was slow to take physical shape, though it had a library, a plot set aside for a church, and the colony's only "Glebe" of 300 acres (Glebes were farms set aside for the use of Anglican Ministers), which had been granted to the parish in 1706 to encourage the settlement of a Church of England Minister at Bath. Except for an occasional visit from a clergyman, St. Thomas Church did not acquire its first minister until 1719, and construction of St. Thomas Church was not begun until 1734.

For decades the Society of Friends (Quakers) was the sole representative of organized religion in Bath. In the early days most dissenters from the Anglican faith were the Quakers established in the colony in 1672.

Conflict between politically motivated religious factions had been long brewing and finally erupted into armed warfare known as the Cary Rebellion. The English concept of a state-church being the issue at stake signifying the beginning Of the separation of church and state in North Carolina.

The Quakers were firmly entrenched in the colony dominating all branches of government and when the requirement for declaring loyalty to the Church of England was reinstated, Quakers were barred from office because of their religious conviction.

They had previously been exempt from swearing an Oath of Allegiance to the Crown. Governor Thomas Cary showed a preference for the Quaker side and he and the Quakers ruled the province in an atmosphere of tension from 1708 to 1711, until the Lord's Proprietors appointed Edward Hyde as Deputy Governor of North Carolina and the opposing governments battled until Cary's rebellion collapsed.

This disrupting effect of war nearly ceased government and the courts during the 3 years of debate and bloodshed. Coupled with a severe drought in the summer of 1711, as well as the raging epidemic of yellow fever, the settlement was left weak and exhausted and vulnerable to attack by the Indians, who meanwhile were gathering strength with guns and ammunition. The dominant Indian power in eastern North Carolina was that of the Tuscaroras who at first were friendly to the white settlers. As the settlers increasingly moved onto the Indians's land, kidnapping and enslaving their people and subjecting them to insulting treatment, resentment and hatred of the settlers of Bath County developed and intensified, culminating in the decision to destroy all settlers and their plantations and crops. The Tuscaroras, under their leader King Hancock, struck 22 September 1711, and for three days slaughtered over190 whites, taking prisoner 20 to 30 settlers who were living along the Pamlico, Neuse and Trent Rivers.

It was with this background of uncertainty and fear, that Farnifold Green and others made out their wills. Farnifold's the 26th of October 1711. The Indians for the next three years would raid three or four families at a time, retreating into the swamps making it impossible to follow them. This problem continued until the government finally turned from the policy of extermination of the hostiles, to one of peaceful agreement. On 11 February 1715, a treaty of peace was made with the surviving hostile Indians and they were assigned a reservation on Lake Mattamuskeett in Hyde County, thus ending the Tuscarora War, however, too late for our Farnifold Green who was massacred in 1714 at age 40.

Furnifold Green, Planter, made out his will 26 October 1711 and it is recorded in Book 2 p.10 of the old Bath County records. He divided his many acres of land and plantations between his sons and daughters when they reached the age of 18. He left the plantation he lived on to his wife Hannah, and 250 A. to his step-daughter Ann Smithwick.

A letter from Governor Pollock dated 3 October 1712 "appoints Furnifold Green to Captain, Commissary, to impress and supply the army with anything that is to be had in the County of Bath". At that time Bath County included what is now Craven, Beaufort, Carteret, Onslow, Pamlico, Lenoir, Greene, Wayne, Johnston and Wake Counties.

In 1714, Farnefold with his son Thomas, one white servant and two Negroes, were murdered on his 1700 acre plantation by the Tuscarora Indians. Another son was shot through the shoulder but managed to escape. The plantation, house, stock of cattle and hogs, were plundered and entirely destroyed by the Indians.

His widow Hannah later married her third husband, Richard Graves, Surveyor and citizen of Craven precinct. He made the "Plat of Lots of Point Beaufort", now considered one of the most beautiful of the old towns of North Carolina. Richard Graves died in 1730 naming his wife Hannah Executrix.

    Notes:

Titus, a Planter, lived on a plantation next to his brother Farnefold inOctober, 1711 - Bath Co., North Carolina. This land was assigned a patent for 400 acres in Westmoreland County, Virginia 18 March 1662, due by new rightfor transporting 8 persons. (This land was first granted to Richard Codsford in 1654 and then to Henry Patton in 1657. If they did not clearpart of the acreage as required in a certain amount of time, the land wasgranted to someone else.) [james_s_mills_jr 2.ged]

John Milton, born in 1756 in Halifax County, North Carolina - died in1817 in Burke County, Georgia, is sometimes confused with John J. Melton, born about 1740 in Hanover County, Virginia - died around April 1795 in Hanover/Fluvanna County, Virginia. John Milton married Hannah Elizabeth Spencer in 1780. John Melton married Elizabeth Wade in 1762/1763. John Melton descends from Thomas Melton, born about 1570 in England; John Milton descends from John Milton, born 1564 in England. Thomas Melton & John Milton were brothers, sons of Richard Milton, born 1536 in England.

John Milton's mother could have been Mary Pharr, Mary Farr, or Mary Farrar. Any of these three women could have been married (or given birth) to John Milton; John Melton; Jonathan Melton, Jr.; or Robert Melton. Sources can be found which provide for all of these possible scenarios. After reviewing all available information, I've concluded that John Milton was the son of Frances Morgan (Mary) Farr (1737-1756) and John Milton (1735- ). It appears Mary died either in childbirth or soon after John was born. There is actually another possible Mary Farr in this line. Frances Morgan (Mary) was born to Richard Farr and Hannah Green in 1737. Her aunt, Richard's sister, was also named "Mary Farr" and was born in 1708. I believe that Mary Farr was the mother of the 1735 John and the 1695 John Milton was his father. Since the 1695 John Milton supposedly came to America in 1730 and married soon after, obviously, 1737 Frances Morgan (Mary) Farr could not have been his wife. Compounding even more the confusion, some sources give 1756 as the dates of death for both the 1708 & 1737 Mary Farrs!

From "The Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans", Johnson, Rossiter, ed., Boston, MA, The Biographical Society, 1904: "Milton, John, soldier, was born in Halifax county, N.C. He joined the Revolutionary army as an ensign in the 1st Georgia regiment, Jan. 7, 1776; was promoted 1st lieutenant; and was taken prisoner at Fort Howe, Georgia, in February, 1777, with Lieut. William Caldwell, on the surrender of that place, held as a hostage, and imprisoned in the castle at St. Augustine, Florida, until November, 1777. He was promoted captain, Sept. 15, 1777, and on his release returned to the army and served until the end of the war, retiring Sept. 15, 1782. He was secretary of the state of Georgia in 1777, 1781-83 and 1789, and on Dec. 6, 1778, at the approach of the British, removed the public records to Perrysburg by order of the governor. He engaged in planting after the war, and received the two votes of the Georgia electors for first President of the United States in 1789. He was a charter member of the (Georgia) Society of the Cincinnati. He was also one of the first mayors of Augusta, Georgia. John married Hannah E. Spencer, and of their children, Gen. Homer Virgil Milton (q.v.), was an officer in the war of 1812."

From "Historical Register Of Officers Of The Continental Army": "Milton, John (Ga). Ensign 1st Georgia, 7th January, 1776; 1st Lieutenant, November 1776; taken prisoner at Fort Howe, 8th February, 1777; Captain 15th September, 1777; Aide-de Camp to General Lincoln in 1780, and to General Marion in 1781; retired 15th July, 1782. (Died 1803.)" After the war ended, John Milton became a charter member of the Society of Cincinnati and served as the first secretary for the Georgia Society.

An interesting account appears in a Milledgeville newspaper on May 5, 1828: "The following is a correct list of the Officers of the Georgia line, during the Revolutionary War, who were, or are still, entitled to Military Land Warrants, under the Act of Congress. The lands are, it is believed, situated in Ohio, and are valuable. This list is published for the information of such officers as are still alive, and for the benefit of the heirs of those who are deceased." It lists among the names of 48 officers: Milton, John -- Captain. Warrant # 323 for 300 acres was issued for his Revolutionary War service. Records from his Bounty Land Pension File at the National Archives include a letter written by Milton Dec. 29, 1806, to Gov. Milledge about the land due him for his Revolutionary service. GA Land Lottery-1827; Jefferson Co., Georgia He acquired No. 23, Section 5 in Carroll, Georgia, No. 29, Dt. 16, Sec. 5.

Milton County, Georgia was created on December 18, 1857 from parts of Cherokee, Forsyth, and Cobb counties. It was named for John Milton, Georgia's first secretary of state. During the American Revolution, Milton traveled to Charleston, South Carolina, and New Bern, North Carolina before moving to Maryland with the official records of the state while Georgia was occupied by the English. OLD MILTON COUNTY

This was the Courthouse of Milton County at the time it was merged with Fulton County Jan. 1, 1932. When the County was created by Act of the Legislature Dec. 18, 1857, it was named for Homer V. Milton, General in the War of 1812, though some claim the name was for his ancestor John Milton, first Secretary of State of Georgia. Among the first County Officers were: Sheriff James C. Mitchell; Clerk of Superior Court Joseph W. Johnston; Clerk of Inferior Court John L. Moore; Ordinary Oliver P. Skelton; Tax Receiver Barnabas B. Johnson; Tax Collector John K.C. Shirley; Treasurer John P. Reaves; Coroner H.W. Paris and Surveyor William Young.

    Notes:

    Fifth governor of Florida
    October 7, 1861 to April 1, 1865

John Milton was born near Louisville, Ga., on April 20, 1807. A descendant of the English poet John Milton, he practiced law, first in a number of Georgia and Alabama communities and later in New Orleans. Before coming to Florida in 1846, Milton allegedly killed an adversary in a duel.

After entering Florida politics, Milton became a statewide force in the Democratic party, serving as a presidential elector in 1848 and as a member of the 1850 House of Representatives. A vigorous states-righter, Milton encouraged the early secession of Florida from the Union.

As governor, Milton stressed Florida's ability to serve as an important source of food and salt for the Confederate war effort. On April 1, 1865, as the southern cause was collapsing, John Milton shot himself at "Sylvania," his home near Marianna. In his last message to the legislature, he had said, "Death would be preferable to reunion."

John Milton was the fifth Governor of Florida (October 7, 1861- April 1, 1865). He was born near Louisville in Jefferson County, Georgia on April 21, 1807. He was the son of General Homer Virgil and Elizabeth (Robinson) Milton. He was an attorney who practiced in a number of Georgia and Alabama communities and in New Orleans. He served in Florida during the Seminole War as a captain of a volunteer company and in 1846 moved to Jackson County as a farmer. He became active in politics and was a presidential elector in 1848 and a member of the House of Representatives from Jackson County in 1850. He was a vigorous States-Righter who encouraged the seizure by Florida forces of a Federal military establishments and also instrumental in the early secession of Florida from the Union.

As Governor, he developed a very active state militia and stressed Florida's ability to serve as an important source of food and salt for the Confederate forces. Collapse of the Southern cause was followed by his death, April 1,1865 by a self-inflected gunshot wound at his family home Sylvania, near Marianna preferring “death to reunion.” He was married twice. He had 4 children by his first wife, Susan Amanda Cobb. His first wife died on April 25, 1842 and in 1844 he married again to Caroline Howze of Alabama with whom he had 10 children.

John married Susan Amanda Cobb on 9 Feb 1826. Susan was born on 27 Sep 1809 in Georgia, USA; died on 23 Nov 1840; was buried in Saint Lukes Episcopal Cemetery, Marianna, Jackson, Florida, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Frontier Lawman. Jefferson Davis Milton was the youngest child of fourteen children of Florida Governor John Milton. He had a sad childhood being four-years-old when his father committed suicide after the Confederacy had lost the war. The governor left his wife Caroline Howze with several young children to face the hardships of living on their huge plantation, the Sylvannia in Jackson County, FL, in a war-torn state without slaves to work the fields. Since the Milton family was now penniless, young Jeff Milton did not receive the formal education, which his older siblings were offered. At the tender age of fifteen years old, Jeff Milton left home and headed west for a better life in Texas. First, he was a helper in his older brother's store then he was a cowboy on a ranch. It was at this point his long and successful career in law enforcement began. At the age 17 years, Milton stated his age was 21 to become a Texas Ranger where he quickly mastered the fast draw with a handgun. Standard weapons were issued to each new ranger, but Milton decided to use a .45 single action for his handgun, and he did for the rest of his life. After about 4 years, he drifted through west Texas to southern New Mexico as he continued his career as a Deputy U.S. Marshal, sheriff's deputy, police chief and in other law enforcement positions. In March 1887 he accepted a post as a mounted customs inspector on the Arizona-Mexico border with the duties of making one-man patrols of the desert close to the border. Later he became a cattle rancher, prospected for gold and was a railroad conductor at one point before returning to law enforcement. In the Texas frontier town of El Pasco, Milton took the position of sheriff in 1894 and had to deal with the outlaw John Wesley Hardin, who had been documented to killing at least 50 lawmen. Knowing Milton history as a fast gun, Hardin just handed over his gun, as he would not gamble his life to fight Milton. This lawman was quoted, "I never killed a man who didn't need killing, and I never shot an animal except for meat." As with other lawmen of this era, he was accused a couple of times of not being fair in a gunfight but was never arrested. Bringing the law to the wild west was no easy task, and Milton had to use his gun often bringing down such outlaws as Bronco Bill" Walters, "Three Fingered Jack" Dunlop, Bill "Kid" Johnson, and "Bravo Juan" Yoas. In 1900 a train robber wounded the Wells Fargo guard Milton in his left arm leaving it disable for the rest of his life. In 1904 he accepted the position as Border Agent to enforce the Chinese Exclusion Act for the Immigration Service at the appointment of President Theodore Roosevelt. He patrolled the borders between Mexico and the United States for the next 28 years apprehending smugglers, illegal aliens and other outlaws who crossed this lawman's path. This was before the present day Border Patrol was organized. Today, U.S. Border Patrolmen recognize Jeff Milton as their hero, and he is known as "the first Border Patrolman." He continued with the agency until he was 72-years-old, when he was forced to retire due to federal job cuts of the Great Depression. Milton did marry in 1919 to Mildred Taitt of New York, but never really settled down to a "stay-at-home" married life-style. Dying at home at the age of 86, Jeff Milton lived a long and productive life. After his body was cremated, his ashes, without any traditional religious service, were scattered over his beloved Arizona desert. (bio by: Linda Davis ldavis810@comcast.net)
