    George Washington Green

    Builders of Lake City

    George Washington Green, who has been a familiar figure about the lumber camps and woods’ mills for more than half a century, has had a varied career. He laughed as he told of his early schooling, which was scattered over a period of twelve years and totaled about fifteen weeks.

    He was born in Baker County and as a barefoot lad of 12 met the celebrated Eppinger Russell coming to Olustee from Savannah to found a great lumber mill. Mr. Russell wanted to see Palestine Lake and hired the little Green boy as his guide, for which service Mr. Russell gave the lad eleven cents, a dime and a penny. It was the first dime Mr. Green had ever seen; he knew the value of a penny and had secretly wished the lumber man had give him two pennies, but later when his older brother read the inscription on the coin and told him it was worth ten pennies, the boy looked upon the hoard as riches beyond the dream of avarice!

    Mr. Green’s father was Anson Ruben Green, one of the seven boys, sons of a Baptist preacher. The family is of English extraction and can trace the lines back eight generations to the famous Nathaniel Green, patriot and hero. His mother was Anna Williams Green. The Greens and the Williamses migrated from Charlestown , S. C. to Columbia County in 1844 and here Mr. Green’s parents were married in 1850. The senior Mr. Green died here Nov. 20, 1885 ; his wife had passed away in 1871, when the child was but three years old.

    Mr. Green’s father was a mill man and the family was living in Baker County when he was born on Jan. 25, 1864 , but they resumed their residence in this community in 1875 and this city has been the Green hometown since that time.

    Mr. Green marvels at the facilities for obtaining an education in these days. He recalls the scarcity of schools in his youth. He was fourteen years old before he had ever seen a school house and was fifteen before he ever entered one. His first teacher was the late father of Mayor M. L. Plympton, at the Falling Creek school. He put in five weeks at that school. The family then moved over on Double Run and there he attended school to Mayor Plympton himself; that was in 1887. In 1891 he was employed up about Genoa and had his third opportunity to attend school. The schools those days only operated two to four months each year and the buildings were dark clapboards of mere long buildings, sometimes without either windows or doors, only the openings. He was quite a big boy before he ever saw a glass window.

    Mr. Green recalls that his first job was on the farm of W. W. Herrin, who died recently in the Lake Shore Hospital in this city. His father hired him out under a year’s contract for his board and $75 per year. During the twelve months Mr. Green withdrew $9.45 from his salary for clothes and at the end of the year Mr. Herrin gave the senior Mr. Green $65.55 for the boy’s services.

    Mr. Green tried railroading for a short time when he engaged as fireman on the Seaboard. He recalls bringing the iron from the boats at Fernandina to Lake City when the Georgia Southern was built through this community. He has done carpenter work and contracting and in 1907 served as justice of the peace in the Third District. He laughed when he stated that he never had a single case to come up in his court, because he always managed to get the contestants to settle without litigations. During his term of office his fees amounted to exactly fifty cents and that amount was paid to him for affixing his deal to an instrument.

    The subject of our lines was married Dec. 31, 1894 when Elizabeth Thomas, sister of N. H. Thomas, the mill man, became his wife. They are the parents of eleven children, six of whom are living.

    The living children are Nettie, wife of Tom L. Avery, of this city; Gladys Viola, a nurse in the Alachua County Hospital at Gainesville; Ruben of this city, an employ of the State Road Department; John, of Starke, and Ernest, who lives at home and is a member of the Florida National Guards, now at Camp Foster.

    Of the children only Nettie has offspring. Mr. and Mrs. Averyhave five children and these are Mr. Green’s grandchildren. Mr. Green has one living brother, the well known Jack Green of Gainesville and one living sister, Elizabeth, widow of the late Louis Griffin of White Springs.

    Mr. Green has been a life-long member of the Advent Christian Church and joined the Masons as a young man. Mr. and Mrs. Green reside in Melrose Park , where they have a pretty little home overlooking Featherwood Gorge, a tributary to Alligator Lake and once a great Indian camp.

    Note: George W. Greene died June 8, 1942 and was buried in the Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery . Elizabeth T. Greene was born Nov. 15, 1875 , died Aug. 20, 1947, and was buried beside her husband.

    DISBROW, ANNIE MURIEL GREENE, 70, of Lake City, died Thursday, February 28, 2008, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

    A native and lifelong resident of Columbia County, Mrs. Disbrow was the daughter of the late John Franklin Greene and Mrs. Lucille Bishop Greene. Mrs. Disbrow was a graduating member of the Columbia High School Class of 1955. She was a school bus driver for the Columbia County School System for twenty-five years prior to retiring. Mrs. Disbrow was a charter member and author of the charter for the Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Department and continued as a "First Responder" member for many years. Mrs. Disbrow was also a "poll worker" for the Deep Creek voting precinct. In her spare time she enjoyed fishing and gardening.

    Mrs. Disbrow is survived by her husband of fifty-one years, Kenneth R. "Ken" Disbrow; two sons, Jimmy Disbrow (Daisy) of Orlando, Florida; K.R. "Rick" Disbrow, Jr., of Lake City; a daughter, Deborah "Debbie" Bourie (Huron) of Lake City; her mother, Lucille Bishop Greene of Lake City; a brother, Jimmy Greene of Lake City; and four sisters, Linda Thomas and Nona Norris both of Lake City, Carol Batey of Fort White, Florida and Donna Hughes of Interlachen, Florida. Nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Disbrow will be conducted at 11AM, Wednesday, March 5, 2008 in the chapel of the Dees-Parrish Family Funeral Home.

    Interment will follow in the Greene Cemetery (441 North of Lake City).

    The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5-7 Tuesday evening.

    In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donation be made to the Deep Creek Volunteer Fire Department, 9630 N. US Highway 441, Lake City, FL 32055.

    Nona Ernestine Norris, age 80, of Keystone Heights, Florida passed away on July 16, 2016 at Windsor Health and Rehabilitation Center with her loving family by her side.

    Nona was born on March 20, 1936 in Lake City, Florida where she was raised by her loving parents John Greene and Lucille Bishop Greene.

    Nona graduated from Columbia County High School and married the love of her life, Robert Franklin Norris, shortly after. She was a devoted wife and loving mother to her 3 children. Nona enjoyed her longtime career as a Car Sales Representative. She also enjoyed traveling, driving, playing bingo with her retirement friends, dancing, and cooking for her family.

    Nona was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of 28 years, Robert Franklin Norris; and her sisters, Muriel Disbrow, Carol Batey, and Johnalynn Greene.

    Nona is survived by her loving children, Roberta Norris (Steven) Schneider of Interlachen, FL, Elizabeth "Connie" (Mike Finley) Norris of Keystone Heights, FL, and Tom (Joyce) Graham of Lake City, FL; her brother, Jimmy Greene of Lake City, FL; her sisters, Linda Thomas of Lake City, FL and Donna Hughes of Hollister, FL; her four granddaughters, Autumn Robohm, Savannah Norris Finley, Cheri Hurst, and Leslie Graham; her two grandsons, Philip and James Graham; her fifteen great grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren.

    Services will be held Saturday, July 23, 2016 at the home of Linda Thomas and Interment will be at Memorial Cemetery in Lake City, Florida at a later date. Arrangements are under the care and direction of FERREIRA FUNERAL SERVICES and ARCHIE TANNER MEMORIAL CHAPEL Starke, Fl. 904-964-5757.

    Mrs. Carol Greene Batey, 68, a resident of Union County, Florida, passed away early Monday morning April 9, 2012 in the Haven Hospice of the Suwannee Valley following an extended illness. A lifelong resident of Columbia and Union Counties Mrs. Batey was the daughter of the late John Franklin and Lucille Bishop Greene. She was of the Methodist faith and was a member of the Lake City Moose Lodge. Mrs. Batey very much enjoyed dancing, throwing darts, playing dominoes, cooking and entertaining especially for her family but her favorite hobby was fishing.

    Mrs. Batey is survived by "the love of her life", Bill Baker; her son, John (Cindy) Davis; her daughters, Diane Marchiano; Tammy Young (Stan) and Hazel Irish (David) all of Lake City; a brother, Jimmy Greene (Susan) of Lake City and her sisters, Nona Norris of Keystone Heights, Florida; Linda Thomas of Lake City, Florida; and Donna Hughes (Steve) of Hollister, Florida. Fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren also survive.

    James Franklin “Jimmy” Greene, Sr., 81, of Lake City, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, March 7, 2021 with his family by his side after a brief illness.

    He was born in Lake City on September 1, 1939 to the late John Franklin Greene and Lucille Bishop Greene. He has made Lake City his home his entire life and was of the Baptist faith. He was a truck driver for G.W. Hunter and Florida Rock for many years and was a longtime member of the Lake City Masonic Lodge #27 and the Lake City Shrine Club, which was a big part of his life. Known fondly as the “pileau” man, he enjoyed cooking and raising money for many different organizations. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

    He is preceded in death by three sisters, Muriel Disbrow, Nona Norris and Carol Batey.

    He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Susan Greene; sons, James Greene Jr. and John Greene (Laurel); daughters, Kimberly Maxwell (Cary) and Melissa Bailey; sisters, Linda Thomas and Donna Hughes; eight (8) grandchildren, Bryon Maxwell (Laura), Justin Douylliez, McKenzie Brown, Kendall Greene, Logan Greene, Daphne Greene, Abby Greene, John Greene Jr., and five (5) great-grandchildren, Aniston Maxwell, Liam Maxwell, Miles Maxwell, Emmett Douylliez and Hunter Douylliez, along with numerous friends and family.

    A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be conducted on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. in the Gateway-Forest Lawn Memorial Chapel with Rev. Ken Hamilton officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 P.M. (one hour prior to the services) at the funeral home.

    George Albert "Al" Greene, 88, O'Brien, FL passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2022. He was born in Lake City, FL, moved to O'Brien thirty years ago from River Ridge, LA, and attended Union Baptist Church. Mr. Greene also served in the Army 82nd Airborne and Navy reserve. He volunteered at the VA, served as a past potentate Jerusalem Temple, and past President of the Southeastern Shrine; he was also known for transporting children to the Shiners Hospital using his own airplane.

    Mr. Greene is survived by his sons: George S. Greene (Julie), Earnest A. Greene (Denise), Thomas A. Greene, Terry L. Greene (Michelle), Gary B. Greene (Tara); daughter: Geneva Karen Ziller (Robert); and daughter-in-law: Debbie Greene; sister: Audrey Nelson; brothers: Arnold Greene, Andrew Greene (Sherry); nineteen grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

    He was preceded in death by his wife: Sarah Cooksey Greene and his son: Vernon Greene.

    Services will be held at 11 am Saturday, October 15th at Daniels Memorial Chapel in Branford with a visitation held prior to the service beginning at 10 am.     Mr. Ernest Allan Greene, 81, of Lake Butler, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, November 30, 2019 at the Malcolm Randall VA Medical center in Gainesville after an extended illness. He was born in Lake City on April 1, 1938 to the late Cephus Ernest and Irma Lee Miller Greene. He has made the Lake City/Lake Butler area his home all of his life and was a United States Coast Guard Veteran. He was in the Construction trade all of his life, and after retirement, was still active in the trade and he often said “I can fix anything except, a broken heart”. He was known as a jack of all trades, and enjoyed fishing. He was also known to be very artistic.

    He is preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda Killebrew Greene; sister, Agnes Simmons; sister-in-law, Sarah Greene; brother-in-law’s, Jim Nelson, Ray Simmons and Lynne Foret.

    He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Vicki Richards Greene; children, Cindy Miller (Todd), Sherry Peters (Rick), Ernest Greene, Jr., and Daniel Greene; siblings, Albert Greene, Anna Pickett (Raymond), Arnold Greene, Audrey Nelson, Andrew Greene (Cheryl) and Ernestine Foret. Numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

    A celebration of Mr. Greene’s life will be conducted on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. in the Gateway-Forest Lawn Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 P.M. (one hour prior to the services) at the funeral home. A reception will follow at the local VFW Post 2206 in Lake City after the services.
