    Died:
    Nolia Wilkes Watkins
    (January 5, 1925 - November 27, 2012)

Macon-Nolia Wilkes Watkins, age 87, died at home on November 27, 2012, after several years of declining health.

She was the widow of M.T “Tommy” Watkins, who died in 1996, a marriage that lasted for over 55 years. Mrs. Watkins was born in Laurens County to Othan Wilkes and Essie Greenway Wilkes on Jan 5, 1925. Living in Macon most of her life, she was a graduate of A. L. Miller Sr. High School.

She is survived by her son Walter T. Watkins of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and daughter and son-in-law Wanda W. and Dr. John P. Atkinson, of Macon, grandchildren Thomas H. and Bethany A. Atkinson of Decatur, GA, and Drs. Steven P. and Denise S. Atkinson of Smyrna, GA, great grandchildren Luke and Landon Atkinson of Decatur, GA, Corinne Atkinson of Smyrna, and “Best Buddy” Lorene Davis.

Mrs. Watkins was a devoted member of Cherokee Heights United Methodist Church for over 63 years and later became a member of Vineville United Methodist Church. She was also an active member of the Macon Women’s Club, Salvation Army, Wesley Glen, and the Methodist Home Auxiliaries until her health declined. One of her greatest joys was in serving others. At age 83, she learned to knit caps to give to ladies who had hair loss due to cancer treatments. During the next 2½ years she knitted and gave away over 400 caps and was instrumental in establishing knitting groups all over the Southeast. She always prayed that each recipient would receive as much joy in wearing the cap as she had in making it. A celebration of her life will be held at Vineville United Methodist Church on Friday, November 30, at 2:00 o’clock with Dr. Marcus Tripp and Rev. Jimmy Duke, Jr., officiating with visitation to follow. Burial will be private. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Vineville United Methodist Church; Epworth by the Sea Methodist Center (PO Box 20407, St. Simons Island, GA 31522), (www.epworthbythesea.org); or Heifer International, (att.
