    Mrs. Frances B. Sullivan, 79, of Rockingham, died Friday, June 10, 2005, at First Health Richmond Memorial Hospital.

    Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 13, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Beverly Hills Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Zimmerman officiating. Burial will be held after the service at Richmond Memorial Park.

    The family will receive friends Sunday, June 12 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Watson-King Funeral Home in Rockingham. The family will also receive friends at other times at her daughter's home, Ann S. Rhodes residence.

    She was born June 16, 1925, in Scotland County to the late Hattie Wilkes and John Arch Barber. Frances is preceded in death by her husband, Jerrel R. Sullivan.

    She is survived by three daughters; Ann S. Rhodes of Rockingham, Becky Bowers and husband Danny of Rockingham, and Jane Burnette and husband Duane of Rockingham; a son, Danny Sullivan and wife Denise of Rockingham. Also surviving are a bother, Tyson Barber of Laurinburg; 12 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.

    Watson-King Funeral Home of Rockingham is handling the arrangements of the Sullivan family.

    She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willard Hammond; five brothers, Robert Barber, Claude Barber, Floyd Barber, Charles Barber and Raymond Barber; and a sister, Peggy Tedder. She retired from United Carolina Bank and then pursued a career hanging wallpaper.

    Survivors in addition to her mother include three daughters, Jennifer Lamb of Laurinburg, Sharon Skipper of Oak Island and Cindy Evans of Shallotte; four brothers, John Barber of Cameron, Ray Barber and Joe Barber of West End and Fred Barber of Aberdeen; two sisters, Jean Whitt of Ashley Heights and Gail Barber of Carthage; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be held Thursday September 11, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Peacock-Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service with Jim Brown officiating.

    The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the residence, 114 SE 8th Street, Oak Island.

    He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Carol Barber; his son, Joseph Lee Barber, Jr.; his daughter, Elizabeth Yvonne “Vonnie” Barber Thomas (Ron); five grandchildren, Elizabeth Dawn Keyser (Ray Aull), Carrie Lee Rogers-Buchanan (David), Martha Faith Rogers (Tomie), Jacob Isaac Rogers, and Corey Gray Childress; step-grandchildren Dillon Burton, Justice Childress, and Tyler Burton. He is also survived by his siblings Earnest Ray Barber (Connie), Elizabeth Jean Whitt (Ronnie Anderson), Brenda Gale Baker, Frederick Allen Barber (Mary Lou) and a host of nieces, nephews and other extended family.

    In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his siblings, Eula Mae Hammond, Robert Layton Barber, William Claude Barber, John Washington Barber, Charles David Barber, Raymond Mitchell Barber, Peggy Ann Tedder, and Alvin Floyd Barber.

    Joe was devoted to serving his country and community. He demonstrated this through his service in the U.S. Army as a combat veteran during the Vietnam War and by working as both a Pinehurst Police Officer and Fire-Fighter. He grew up on a tobacco farm and continued throughout his life to enjoy growing vegetables in his garden. He like to sit on the front porch and watch traffic go by while enjoying an endless cup of black coffee, and watching all the birds and squirrels he fed play about on his property. His primary focus in life was always loving his family.

    A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 1:00PM at Boles Funeral Home, 425 W. Pennsylvania Avenue, Southern Pines, NC 28387. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00PM. Interment will follow at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church., 4164 Hoffman Road, Jackson Springs, NC 27281.

    In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX, 75284-0692.

    Ernie R. Barber Jr., a son of Moore County who cherished all that it and its people had to offer, died suddenly Saturday night. He was 48.

    Born to Ray and Connie Barber, Ernie embraced life in the Sandhills. He loved hunting, fishing, riding three-wheelers and playing softball. He was a total outdoorsman who respected the environment and knew the blessings it bestowed on him. He honored what he was given by being a giving person in return. He was always ready to offer his help to any who asked, and he freely gave of his time, talents and treasure.

    As a native in a small, rural county, Ernie knew someone virtually everywhere he went, whether it was just a simple trip to the grocery store or going out to dinner with family. Friends remarked how Ernie could hardly turn around without meeting someone he knew.

    Ernie was always good with his hands and had a careful eye for quality. He enjoyed a long career as a pressman at Harris Printing from 1983 to 2007, and he held a similar job at The Pilot newspaper for three years. Most recently, he was a supervisor with UPS.

    Although he loved the outdoors, it was from family that Ernie drew his greatest joy and strength. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Deborah. He was a wonderful son and brother, and he was devoted to his children and grandkids, who loved to call him "Papa."

    Left to honor his memory and grow his legacy are his wife, Deborah; parents Ray and Connie Barber; his children, sons Ryan Barber, Corey Barber and daughter Kristen Scarlett, their spouses Sarah Barber, Lindsay Barber and Bryan Scarlett; Ryan's mother, Samantha Baker, and Terri Matthews, mother of Kristen and Corey; grandchildren, Jace Ray Barber, Jayden Scarlett and Baylee Scarlett; stepchildren, Stephane Edmonds and Matthew Kilmer, their spouses Chris Edmonds and Sarah Kilmer; and stepgrandchildren Addison and Harper; brother Mike, sisters Rhonda Thompson and Tina Marks, their spouses Brandy Barber, Hurley Thompson and Tony Marks and nieces and nephews Melissa, Colton, Brittany, Tabitha, Brooke, Ryan, Greg, Geoff, Stewart, Zach and Justin; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

    A visitation will be held Thursday, June 27 at Boles Funeral Home, Southern Pines, from noon to 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the NRA and National Wildlife Federation.
