Corene Walton -WARNER ROBINS - Corene (Wilkes) Walton of Warner Robins, Georgia, was born March 11, 1918 in Laurens County, Georgia, and after a long illness, passed away Saturday, October 15, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia. Corene was preceded in death by her husband of forty-four years, Rufus Walton, and six siblings including her twin sister, Irene. She is survived by her sister, Sally Wilkes Shuman of Baxley, Georgia and twelve nieces and nephews in Georgia, Ohio and Texas.
Corene's early years in Laurens County involved getting an education, helping out at home with the younger siblings, and helping with the gardening. She was also athletic and loved involvement in sports. Corene, her older sister, Edith, and her twin Irene were starters on her high school basketball team.
Corene was a graduate of the Georgia State College for Women (since renamed Georgia State College and University), and subsequently earned her teaching certificate during summers while teaching. She taught the fourth grade at RW Lindsey Elementary School in Warner Robins for more than thirty years before retiring, and then enjoyed a second career substitute teaching in Houston County for eight years. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Warner Robins for many years, and hosted the Wilkes family's annual Christmas Reunion for more than twenty years.
As her health declined, Corene moved to Atlanta eleven years ago to be near her sisters Irene and Elizabeth. The family is especially grateful for the continuing support from her church home in Warner Robins, especially the love and support of the TLC Group who continued to communicate with her to the end of her life.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, October 23, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in Magnolia Park Cemetery in Warner Robins.

Irene Wilkes Scales was born March 11, 1918 in Laurens County, Georgia, with twin sister Corene to Sarah and Georgia W. Wilkes. Irene graduated as Valedictorian from Wirtmore High School and attended Georgia Southwestern College. Irene worked at Robins AFB in Warner Robins, Georgia and later in a management position with Avon in New York. She married Victor H. Scales and later moved to Stone Mountain, Georgia, where she and Victor enjoyed many years of camping together with the Good Sam Club. Irene will be remembered for her warm and infectous humor. Irene is survived by her sisters, Corene Walton of Warner Robins, Evelyn English of Decatur, Sally Shuman and her husband Jack of Baxley and Virginia Heilcher of Dallas, Texas, as well as many nieces nad nephews. A joint memorial for Irene, who died on December 25, and her sister, Betty Phillips who died December 30, will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 4 at Stone Mountain Chapel in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Betty Elizabeth "Betty" Phillips was born November 7, 1925 in Laurens County, Georgia to Sarah and Georgia W. Wilkes. Betty graduated from McRae High School and later from Georgia College in Millegeville. She retired from Robins AFB in Warner Robins, Georgia after 38 years of service. Betty moved to Atlanta in 1997 and enjoyed reading, traveling and being with family. She was a person who cared about others and she demonstrated this on a daily basis with her love and compassion service.
Betty is survived by her sons, Bernard John Maloney and wife Sandra, David Wilkes Maloney and wife Theresa and daughter Susan Maloney Muha of Dallas, Texas grandchildren, Heather Robertson and her husband Edward Robertson and Shannon Maloney; and great-grandchildren, James and Sean Robertson. She is survived by sisters, Corene Walton of Warner Robins, Evelyn English of Decatur, Sally Shurman and her husband, Jack of Baxley and Virginia Heilcher of Dallas, Texas; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A Joint Memorial service for Betty, who died on December 30 and her sister, Irene Scales, who died December 25, will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 4, at Stone Mountain Chapel in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Dr. Janice Hume will officiate.Wages & Sons
