Doris Cason Sweat, 83, of Brunswick (Glynn Co, GA), died Monday, October 20, 2008.
"She had a rare warmth of personality and a beauty of character that left a lasting impression upon all who met her. She was a friend, confidant and cheerleader," said a family member.
She was born in Pierce County December 6, 1923 to Quitman Lemuel Cason and Etha Bennett Cason. She married Quentin Roosevelt Sweat in 1941, whose dream was for the family to own its own furniture store. Doris Sweat was instrumental in its success. The couple opened the Cobweb New and Used Furniture Store on Newcastle Street with partners in 1960. In 1964, the store moved to Norwich Street and in 1971 established what today is Sweat's Furniture. Mrs. Sweat was actively involved in the business until bought out by her sons in 1984.
For many years, she was a member of Norwich Baptist Church and most recently was a member of Northside Baptist Church, Brunswick, where she actively participated in the Joy Sunday School Class. She treasured the friendships that were nurtured in this class.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Quentin R. Sweat; her parents, Quitman and Etha Cason; two brothers, Dr. Cecil D. Cason and Raymond Cason and two sisters, Mildred C. Bennett and Dorothy Mae Sweat.
Survivors include her five children; two daughters, Carolyn Sweat Whitted (David), Blackshear and Diane Sweat Dubberly, Brunswick; three sons, Ward Sweat (Libby), Dwight Sweat (Cindy) and David Sweat, all of St. Simons Island, GA; two brothers, Marlyn Cason (Nelda), Blackshear and Jerry Cason (Vicki), Nashville; seven grandsons, Doug Whitted, Scott Whitted, Jamie Dubberly, Jeff Dubberly, Bryan Sweat, Jonathan Sweat and Jackson Sweat; two granddaughters, Tina Dubberly and Amanda Sweat and three great-granndchildren, Kaleb Whitted, Kristopher Whitted and Tristan Whitted.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, from the Northside Baptist Church in Brunswick.
Visitation will take place at the church from noon until the funeral hour.
Interment will follow at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery in Pierce County.
Active pallbearers will be Scott Whitted, Jamie Dubberly, Jeff Dubberly, Kaleb Whitted, Kristopher Whitted and Bryan Sweat.
Honorary pallbearer will be Doug Whitted.
The family requests memorials be made to the Northside Baptist Church Building Fund, 935 Chapel Crossing, Brunswick, GA.
