- COLLINS - Larry J. Powell, Sr., 86, died Saturday, April 23, 2016 at Candler Hospital in Savannah after a short illness.
He was a retired associate editor of the Savannah Morning News and Savannah Evening Press as well as the author of many books, magazine stories, and articles.
A native of Collins, he was the son of Clarence L. Powell and Zetta James Powell of Collins.
Mr. Powell was a 1945 graduate of Collins High School and attended the University of Alabama.
He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the United States Army.
Mr. Powell was a member of the Collins United Methodist Church.
Surviving include his wife of 65 years, Martha Strickland Bobbie Powell of Collins; a son, Larry James Powell, Jr. and his wife, Gail of Reidsville; and a daughter, Martha Leigh Powell of Woodbine.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, 11 o'clock at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Cobbtown Chapel with visitation one hour prior to the service.
