Cason Jewell Callaway, Jr. age 86, died Sunday, March 20, 2011 at home. Mr. Callaway was born in LaGrange, Georgia, the son of Cason Jewell Callaway and Virginia Hand Callaway. A graduate of Episcopal High School, Alexandria, VA, and a student at The Citadel, Charleston, SC until World War II, when Lt. JG Callaway served in the First Chemical Casual Company.
A lifelong entrepreneur, Mr. Callaway returned to Georgia to start Dixie Size and Chemical, which was sold to Exxon as Callaway Chemical in 1985. He served on many business advisory boards, both local and national, including 4th National Bank, Royal Crown Cola, Boy Scouts of America, Garden Conservancy, The Smithsonian and was a trustee emeritus of his alma mater, Episcopal High School. In Harris County, he supported early childhood education by implementing a pilot program focusing on the parent/child relationship. A generous, loving man with a wicked tennis backhand in earlier days, he always loved reading and over time developed strong concentration and focus. Mr. Callaway's last business venture was to start the Callaway Blue Springs Water Company in 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Virginia, and his grandson Kent Callaway.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Nancy Hodges Callaway, his four children Phebe Robertson, Cason Callaway, III, Kenneth Callaway, and Florence Holmes, ten grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
His heart included love for all his extended family and friends and the family is grateful for all the caretakers that assisted him.
Following a family burial, a memorial service and celebration of his life will be held 4:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 23, 2010 at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, 69 Mobley Road, Hamilton, with the Reverend Jeff Jackson and retired Pastor Mabry Collins officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Nicholas Episcopal or a charity of their choice.

Cason Jewell Callaway Jr., an entrepreneur and philanthropist whose parents founded Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, died Sunday evening at his home. He was 86.
The funeral is 4 p.m. Wednesday at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, 69 Mobley Road in Hamilton.
"He was a real nice and wonderful man. He was one of the most generous people I've ever known," Bill Turner, retired chairman of the W.C. Bradley Co., said Monday. The two were in the same Thursday lunch group. Turner last saw him there about a month ago.
"He was very private about what he did. He didn't do it to get the praise," Turner said.
Callaway was born in LaGrange, the second of three children of Virginia and Cason Callaway Sr.. His nickname was "Caso." He was a graduate of Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., where he became a trustee emeritus, and attended The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., for two years. He then served in the U.S. Army, beginning in World War II, both as an enlisted soldier and then an officer.
One of the founding members in 1998 of St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Hamilton, Callaway donated five of the church's eight acres. The church is off Ga. 315. The building was completed in 2003.
"He was a major contributor and very faithful," said the Rev. Jeff Jackson, the priest at St. Nicholas. "He was one of the most humble and genuine people I've ever met. ... He really understood what it meant to be humble and generous."
Callaway attended Bowling Green Business University Academy, then worked with Callaway Mills. He first worked for the company in New York then in LaGrange.
In addition, in 1952 he founded Dixie Size and Chemical in Columbus, which was sold to Exxon as Callaway Chemical in 1985.
Callaway was a former president of the Georgia-Alabama Council, Boy Scouts of America, and once served on the Scouts' national executive board. He was also a director of the former Fourth National Bank in Columbus. He was a life-long member of the Callaway Foundation.
He was also on the board of the Smithsonian Institute, said his brother, Howard "Bo" Callaway -- a former U.S. Congressman and Secretary of the Army under President Gerald Ford.
"He was extremely generous in many ways," said Bo Callaway. "A lot of it I didn't even know about."
Callaway helped develop commercial property around the former Columbus Square Mall on Macon Road.
"It is a natural development site," Callaway told the Columbus Enquirer in 1964.
In 1973, Callaway donated 50 acres in Russell County for Chattahoochee Valley State Community College, now Chattahoochee Valley Community College.
In his most recent business venture, he founded Callaway Blue Springs Water Company in Harris County in 2002.
Callaway's parents founded the Callaway Gardens resort in 1952. Covering 13,000 acres, it was first named Ida Cason's Gardens.
In addition to Bo Callaway, Cason Callaway is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Nancy Hodges, and their four children: Phebe Callaway Robertson; Cason Callaway III; Kenneth Hodges Callaway; and Florence Callaway Holmes. He had 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Virginia; and a grandson, Kent Callaway.
