Notes |
- Charles Sr. is DAR approved. He has two DAR applications... In one, his wife was Mary Cooper and in the other, his wife was Elizabeth. RW researchers like the Bizzells use Mary Elizabeth Cooper as the wife. In the 1796 Sampson Will of John Porter, he had a daughter named Elizabeth J. Butler. His known sons were born 1750-1760. Charles Sr gives his age as 71 in 1819 in his RW pension application. This puts his YOB at 1748. In deeds, his wife was named Elizabeth. We are satisfied that his wife was Elizabeth Jane Porter who was born about 1750. Source: Huckleberry Historian Vol XXIX Number 3, 1 July 2007 article by Jerome Tew and Sue Barefoot page 5.
On 27 Oct 1781 he was paid 116 pounds on voucher # 92. On 25 March 1782 he was paid 6 pounds on voucher # 2230 for his service in the N.C. Militia. On 24 Nov 1784, he was paid 9/2/0 pounds on voucher #5882. All these vouchers were signed by William Dickson, Thomas Routledge and John King.
Soldier later applied for a pension, at age 71, under the Act of Congress passed 18 March 1818. At the time he stated he was in need of government help, and would like to relinquish his indigent status for a new pension. He was granted this in 1818 and was then living in Craven County, N.C. The will of Charles Butler Sr was written in Sampson County and dated 12 Jan 1811. He is said to have died in 1819. In Sampson County, the family lived on the west side of Little Coharie somewhere between the bridge along S.R. 24 and Salemburg. Source: Revolutionary War Records Duplin/Sampson by V.L. Bizzell and O.M. Bizzell page 47.
