- EARL ZIEBARTH, W. VOLUSIA LEADER, MADE FIRST DIAL CALL
Daytona Beach News-Journal (FL) - Saturday, March 15, 1997
Earl W. Ziebarth, 87, a civic leader in West Volusia for many years, died Wednesday at home.
Mr. Ziebarth, a native of Davenport, Iowa, came to Pierson from New York City in 1930, and engaged in fern growing and citrus production, eventually opening the Grower Supply Co., an agriculture supply house. As chairman of the Pierson Town Council in the late 1930s, he made Volusia County's first dial telephone call.
According to a News-Journal article, Pierson was still struggling to install street lights when Mr. Ziebarth concluded his campaign to line up the 48 dial phone system subscribers needed. He placed the first dialed call to a Southern Bell state manager's office in Jacksonville to initiate the system.
His grandson, Earl Ziebarth III, is a member of the Florida House of Representatives, District 26.
Mr. Ziebarth served nine years as president of the Volusia County Farm Bureau, three years as director at large for the State of Florida, and in 1967 he became fourth district director of the Florida Farm Bureau Federation.
Mr. Ziebarth was the president of the Volusia County Farm Bureau when Leo Nordman of DeLand first became a board member 30 years ago.
''He really impressed me,'' said Nordman, a former Farm Bureau president. ''He was a good leader and a very knowledgable man. He was a fine man.''
In addition to his Farm Bureau activities, Mr. Ziebarth served three terms as president of the Florida Council for the Blind.
Originally a member of the DeLand Lions Club, Mr. Ziebarth helped organize the Pierson Lions Club in the 1950s and became Florida district governor in 1955, helping to lay the groundwork for establishing the Florida Lions Foundation for the Blind, which was chartered in 1958.
He was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church, a 32nd degree Mason and member of Masonic Lodge 77, Barberville, and a member of Scottish Rite Bodies.
Additional survivors include a son, Earl W. Jr., Pierson; a daughter, Dorothy A. Schamay, Ormond Beach; a stepsister, Ruth Hagstrom, Pierson; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the Florida Lions Foundation for the Blind, c/o H.L. Woods, PDG, Executive Secretary/Treasurer, P.O. Box 127, Interlachen 32148. Allen-Summerhill, DeLand, is in charge.
