- Joyce Bedenbaugh Vorwaller, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully early Sunday morning, July 21, 2024, at age 94.
Born on April 2, 1930, to Frank "Shorty" and Emma Bedenbaugh, she was raised in Lake City and graduated as Valedictorian from Lake City High School, where she participated in the National Honor Society, served as the school newspaper Editor, and received the Outstanding Thespian Award and DAR award for Good Citizenship.
She attended Brigham Young University where she majored in Elementary Education, and actively participated in the BYU dance and drama clubs. She graduated with a degree in 1952 and soon began teaching fourth and fifth grade in a four-room school in Alpine, UT.
At BYU she met her eternal companion, Blaine Vorwaller. They married on June 4, 1952, embarking on a life filled with love, service, and dedication to family and faith.
Joyce and Blaine's journey took them from the United States to Italy, where Blaine served in the Air Force as a supply officer. Upon returning to the States, the Vorwaller family settled in Jacksonville, Florida, where they bought a home and raised their five children. Joyce's home was a place of joy and learning, filled with music, love, and a wide variety of family activities and cultural experiences. She nurtured her children's talents with constant encouragement and support.
Joyce was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in various capacities including Primary teacher, Relief Society leader, Seminary teacher, pianist, organist, choir director, and youth drama specialist.
Joyce's dedication to her church and community remained unwavering. She organized many family home evenings and participated in numerous church activities, including teaching home-study and early-morning seminary, and directing musical productions. She supported her husband in his roles within the church, including president of the newly formed Jacksonville, FL East Stake and later stake patriarch. Together, they served as missionaries in the West Indies mission, and as president and matron of the Orlando Florida Temple.
She also played an active role in her community, volunteering over the years for March of Dimes, Cancer Society, Heart Fund, and Literacy Alliance of Northeast Florida.
Joyce found great joy in genealogy work, making it a lifelong undertaking to research and record her ancestry, as well as document her own life story and that of her family. She served for many years as the family historian for her Bedenbaugh and Douberley relatives in Lake City and beyond. Family was always fundamental to her, and she took pride in her extensive posterity. Even in her later life she continued to take an active interest in the activities and endeavors of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Joyce was predeceased by her beloved husband, Blaine.
She is survived by their children: Gaylon Blaine Vorwaller (Madonna), Dana Vorwaller Holladay (Brent), Rhonda Vorwaller Williamson (Alan), Mark Louis Vorwaller (Kristi), and Carmen Vorwaller Jones (Mark). She also leaves behind 25 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held on Monday, July 29, 2024, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 909 SE Country Club Rd, Lake City, FL 32025. There will be a viewing at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m.
Interment will be at the Ebenezer Cemetery.
