- John “Johnny” Blyler, 92, passed away Friday, January 10, 2020 at Mayo Clinic following a sudden illness.
He was son of the late George Jackson Blyler & Clara Catherine Adams Blyler and a native of Jacksonville, Florida. His family's cultural roots were in the Pennsylvania Dutch country. From the age of 12, construction was both Johnny’s work and his passion. He was truly a man of the land and nature who enjoyed working for himself and the pride of a job well done. He specialized in the clearing and grading of land, building of roads, digging of ponds and dirt pits, as well as general demolition work. When Johnny wasn’t working, he enjoyed watching automobile racing, fishing, vacationing in North Carolina, and other activities with family and friends. He and his brother Fred enjoyed discussing the history of railroading, coal mining, the timber industry, as well as collecting related artifacts. Though seemingly a quiet, reserved man, he enjoyed the company of others at his cookouts, on the dock at his farm in Yulee and elsewhere. He had a dry, subtle sense of humor often not readily detected by those unfamiliar with him, but that twinkle in his eye would eventually give him away. He loved his family and his animals, from dogs to goats to donkeys and more.
He married Alice White on January 12, 1950, celebrating 70 years of marriage in 2020. She stood by him through thick and thin, in life, sickness, heartache, tragedy and death. Alice was the yin to Johnny's yang; a strong guiding influence in his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his siblings: Dorothy Price, Fred Blyler, and Clyde Blyler.
Johnny’s surviving family include his loving wife, Alice Blyler; two sons: Michael (Nancy) Blyler and Wayne (Tamra) Blyler; four grandchildren: Garrett (Ashlee) Blyler, Victoria Blyler, John Blyler, Jenna Blyler, and a host of extended family and friends.
The graveside funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Evergreen Cemetery (Gate # 5) with Rev. Steve Kegley officiating.
