- Daniel C. Sandy, 91, of Fayetteville, NC died April 28, 2015 in Raeford NC.
Daniel was born April 21, 1924 in Arabia, NC to Lloyd Allen and Maude Davis Sandy. He grew up in Hoke County and later moved to and settled in Fayetteville, NC in 1956.
He helped his family on their farm until July 1942 when he joined the United States Navy. He was in the Construction Builder "Sea Bee" Combat Detachment Unit. His career, during WW II, was served with much honor and valor. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and the Task Force 68-Operation High Jump Medal. Daniel was selected in 1946 to be a part of an expedition that was headed by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd to the South Pole. They were the first to conduct research and development of Naval combat equipment suitable for arctic cold weather environment. He ended his career in December of 1947 with an Honorable Discharge. Daniel and his brothers made a successful career for themselves in music. They played up and down the east coast including television and radio. During their time on television, WECT, one of their back-up players was Charlie Daniels. He went to Key West Florida where he and his brother Leslie were regulars on the stage at the famous Sloppy Joe's. They also became friends with regular Earnest Hemmingway. He was a member of the St Louis Cardinals Semi Pro Baseball organization and retired from federal civil service February 28, 1983. He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Lloyd and Maude Davis Sandy, sisters, Catherine Sandy Carter and Mae Sandy Pittman and brothers Wilson, Thereon, Mack and Frank Sandy.
He is survived by sons Danny Sandy and wife Libby and Brian Sandy and wife Donna and daughter Beverly Sandy West and husband Doug; grandchildren, Rocky Gruber and wife Laresha, Brandon Sandy and wife Allyson, Austin and Nathan Sandy, Stephanie Gruber Bittle and husband Jerry and Caitlin and Maggie Sandy; great grandchildren, Elijah and Abe Bittle and Jazmine and Briana Gruber. Also surviving are brothers Leslie, Lewis and Eldon Sandy.
