    • Anthony Thomas (Tony) Jennings, age 93, of Carney's Point, NJ passed away peacefully under hospice care at Inspira Health Center, Mullica Hill.

Tony was born August 4, 1928 to John Michael and Margaret Rose (McDonnell)

Jennings at their home in Carney's Point, NJ. He was one of nine siblings. He was married to Barbara Grace (Steedley) Jennings until her death in 1973. Together they had five children of their own.

His father was an avid boxer, and Tony enjoyed the sport as a youth. He joined the Merchant Marines at age 15 and traveled around the world, stopping at ports in Europe, Asia and South America. At times, he was accompanied by a pet chimpanzee called "Monk" that would delight people at his ports of call. He enjoyed telling stories of his travels and sharing his mementos from his journeys.

Tony's brother recalled seeing him walking down the road, suitcase in hand, after returning from the ship. At fifteen years old, he pulled out a large sum of money and handed it to his mother. While other men were spending their hard earned money thoughtlessly, Tony saved it to bring home to his mother.

Later, he served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. It was during Korea that Tony received news of his sister Joan's death and was granted leave to attend her funeral. While at home, he learned that his entire platoon was bombed, leaving no survivors. He always attributed his life to Joan's untimely death and always felt that she guided him.

After his service to our country, he worked in the construction business and at age 30 started his own company: Jennings Equipment and Excavating. He continued to work until his final days - he always said that it kept him active and kept him young.

Tony loomed larger than life over all of his Jennings descendants. They recall the many outings to the C&D Canal to board his boat. They would travel through the Delaware Bay or the Chesapeake, enjoy a day of waterskiing, and stop at marinas to eat and socialize. Later in life, he was still able to hoist his grandchildren and great-grandchildren onto his heavy machines and teach them how they operated. He loved a good steak and would famously ask for a 'skosh' of wine. He cherished his weekly trips to the Deepwater Diner, Village Pub, Holiday Inn or DiPaolo's with family in tow, where they would share stories and joke and laugh with the waiters and waitresses and enjoy dining together. Tony truly loved life. He was kind and extremely generous. He lived every moment to the fullest, whether it was racing a grandchild to the end of the road (he always won the race) or landing a big job. He supported everyone he loved and made sure they knew he always had their back.

Tony always spoke fondly of his visits to other countries including Ireland and Portugal, often with his son by his side. He sought out opportunities to enjoy nature and being outdoors.

Entrepreneur, Veteran, Traveler, Animal lover, a devout Catholic, a great storyteller, a good-natured boaster (when it came to his family member's accomplishments). But most of all was a powerful man with a giant heart and a giving spirit that kept his family close for his many decades.

Tony is a beloved father of Colleen Jennings, Cindy Jennings (Roger Chance), Toni Lynn "Tami" Jennings, Guy (Carla) Jennings. He was the attentive grandfather of Shaun Jennings, Cindi (Stephen) McVeigh-Wagner, Kelin (Larry) Eachus, Dr. Patricia (Peet) Smith (Kevin Zieber), Samantha (Sam) (Andrew) Marandola, Colleen (Evan) Rishel, Justin (Sam) Strawn, Barbara (Brian) Thompson, Toni Lynn (Thomas Ensman Jr.) Licciardelli; Lisa (Kevin) Dougherty. His great-grandchildren include Shaun Jennings Jr; Patrick, Claire, Fiona McVeigh, Jack and Luca Wagner; Hazel and Graham Eachus; Colin and Finnegan Rishel; Casey Strawn; Darius Thompson, Gianluca and Giacomo Licciardelli, and Giuliana Licciardelli-Ensman; Mya and Logan Dougherty. Tony is also survived by his brother Joseph (Catherine) Jennings and nieces and nephews.

Tony was predeceased by his wife Barbara (Steedley) Jennings, his son, Robert Andrew Jennings, daughter-in-law, Karen (Cain) and his grandson, Cory Jennings. Also, his siblings, Francis, Joan, Mary, Peggy, Johnny, Jerry, and Eugene.

Services to celebrate Tony's life will be held on Tuesday, October 12th, 2021 at Adams Funeral Home, 64 Broad Street, Woodstown, NJ 08098. There will be visitation from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Catholic Burial at St. Joseph R.C Church, The Catholic Community of the Holy Spirit Parish, at 1:30 PM. Internment will take place at the Salem County Veterans Cemetery in Pilesgrove.
