Merkle, Edward Lucas, beloved husband, father, grandfather, father-n-law, 78, passed away on May 22, 2011 after a long valiant battle.
Born in St. Louis, MO on August 6, 1932 to Edward G. Merkle and Mildred (Haefner) Merkle. He attended Kirkwood High School and graduated Washington University in St. Louis' School of Engineering, the third generation to do so. Following college, Ed served in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant, stationed in California, working on guidance systems.
He returned to St. Louis and soon married Ruth Duncan, his loving wife of 52 years. In 1960, Ed and Ruth begin a new life in California settling in Garden Grove to raise their family. They all enjoyed a life traveling the US, gardening, and hitting weekend garage sales. Ed worked as an engineer first for Douglas Aircraft, McDonald Douglas and later for Northrop (in the same building he started in with Douglas Aircraft) until he retired in 1993 due to a stroke.
Ed is survived by his wife, Ruth; son, Edward William; daughter, Laura Talbert; son-in-law, Wallace Talbert; grandson, William; and his siblings, Ray (Candace) Merkle, Joy Bockius, and Anne (Ed) Paschke.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jim and his son, Steven Christopher.
Private services for the family will be held at sea on May 27.
He and his jokes will be missed.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
