Dr. William Floyd Humphreys, Jr., 87, of Panama City, FL died Thursday, July 9, 2009.
Dr. Humphreys was the son of the late William Floyd Humphreys, Sr. and the late Leonora Whitaker Humphreys of Sycamore, GA. He was born July 25, 1921 in Berlin, GA. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, Bonnie Kathryn Friar Humphreys and by a son, William Floyd Humphreys, III.
Dr. Humphreys is survived by his daughter, Pamela Humphreys Danley and by his sons, Stephen T. Humphreys and wife, Stephanie, Timothy R. Humphreys, and wife, Beverly and Dr. Randall F. Humphreys and wife Laura. He also is survived by his grandchildren, Kacey Danley, Drew Danley, Ross Humphreys and wife, Carley, Allison Humphreys Haligas and husband, Darren, Danielle Humphreys, William Humphreys, Kristen Humphreys, Lauren Humphreys and Ryan Humphreys. He also is survived by a cousin Tom Cook of Panama City, FL and a cousin, Marjorie Diemer of Newark, N.J.
Dr. Humphreys graduated with a B.S. degree from the University of Georgia in 1942. He completed his medical degree from The Medical College of Georgia in 1945. Dr. Humphreys played the saxophone for the UGA band and remained an avid Bulldog supporter throughout his life. Dr Humphreys completed his internship in Pediatrics at Baroness Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn. He met Kathryn Friar, the love of his life and future wife at Erlanger. He completed further specialty training in communicable diseases in New York City.
Dr. Humphreys served as a medical officer in the U.S. Army, Second Battalion, First Infantry in Korea.
Dr. Humphreys moved to Panama City and started his practice in Pediatrics in 1950. He was the first Pediatrician in Panama City and one of the first in northwest Florida. Dr. Humphreys was loved and respected by his patients and colleagues, caring for thousands of babies and children in the span of over fifty years.
Dr. Humphreys served as a Medical Director of Children’s Medical Society for 26 years. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Cerebral Palsy Clinic. He served on statewide committees to develop and provide support services and housing for the developmentally disabled. He was one of the founding members of the Gulf Coast Medical Center. Dr. Humphreys was active in local, state and national medical societies. He was twice honored by the Florida Pediatric Society as Outstanding Florida Pediatrician.
Dr. Humphreys was a member of First United Methodist Church and an active member of the Lillie Pennington Sunday School Class. He was active in many community organizations, including Military Affairs Committee and the Downtown Kiwanis Club. In his retirement, Dr. Humphreys continued to support the needs of children and youth through his volunteer work with Guardian Ad Litem, the Mentoring Program in local schools, and with the Panama City Marine Institute. He also volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program.
The family wishes to express its appreciation to Dr. Sidney Daffin and to Barbara Langston, Glenda Sly and Tanya Barker, who provided loving care to Dr. Humphreys.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 13, 2009 at First United Methodist Church Panama City with the Rev. David Warren officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Sunday, July 12, 2009 at Kent- Forest Lawn Funeral Home.
