William was a farmer in the area of the present Lambs Bridge Road, which winds eastward toward Candler County Line from Swainsboro, Georgia As found in the history of Antioch Church, and honored by a marker in front of the church, he gave the land on which the church was built and participated in its construction...
When the Civil War started, William and Sarah Coleman had a large family to support. However, when the war seriously threatened Georgia in 1864 William and his son, James Elzie, was enlisted on 25 May 1864 (by Williams brother, Alfred) in Company E, 1st Battn Georgia Reserves, later to be called Symons Regt. Both William and James were captured when Fort McAlliste3r was besieged and captured by Shermans forces...
William returned from a Northern prison and resumed life in Emanuel County.
