- Dr. Rice Ross Holcombe
COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Dr. Rice Ross Holcombe, 83, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, followed by a reception in the Adult Reception Hall. Prior to the service, a private committal service will be held in the church memorial garden. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
Dr. Holcombe passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013. Born April 26, 1929, in Canton, Ga., he was a son of the late John Carl and Lula Belle Ridings Holcombe. He was the fifth of six children. Ross attended Canton Grammer and High Schools and graduated in 1946. He attended North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Ga. as part of the ROTC program and was active in many of the sports teams including basketball and tennis. He graduated in June 1951 with a BS in Biology.
Ross transitioned to the U.S. Army in 1951 as 2nd Lieutenant at Fort Benning, Ga. After officer training, he was assigned to the 45th Division, Battalion Headquarters in Korea. He commanded a combat platoon on the front lines of the Korean War. Later, Ross was assigned to Division Headquarters as Assistant Commander of the Division Security Company where he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. After rotating back to the States, Ross was assigned to Fort Dix, N.J. as Assistant Deputy Post Commander and then was responsible for a Training Company until he resigned his commission to enter medical school.
In 1955, Ross entered the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Ga. and graduated in 1959. While there, he was an active member of Phi Chi Medical Fraternity. In the fall of 1955, he met Nelle Saturday who became his wife on August 18, 1957. Ross interned at Athens General Hospital and did a residency in anesthesia at the Medical College of Georgia, which was completed in 1962. Ross then joined a private practice group in Columbia, S.C., Anesthesiologists of Columbia, where he practiced for 35 years.
Ross lived a very full life with many passions and accomplishments. He was President of the S.C. Anesthesia Society, Chairman of the Board of the S.C. Physician's Care Charity and Founding Member and President of The South Carolina Debutante Ball. He was a long term member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Forest Lake Club, Columbia Medical Society, The American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Sons of the American Revolution. Some of Ross' avid passions were snow skiing, golf, reading, travel, backpacking, genealogy, Pawleys Island and the Boy Scouts.
Ross is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nelle Holcombe; his children, Shawn Raines and her husband, Mark, Chris Holcombe and his wife, Lynn. In addition, his seven wonderful grandkids, Jarrell Raines, Ian Raines, Dylan Raines, Ashley Holcombe, Maggie Holcombe, Jack Holcombe and Patrick Holcombe, survive him. His siblings, Edwin, Faynell and Ray and their spouses also survive him, as well as his sister-in-law, Peggy Stouffer and her husband Paul and brother-in-law, Ray Collins and numerous nieces and nephews. Ross was predeceased by his brothers, Milburne and Elwin.
