- Merle Fernett Steedley Westmoreland Scarborough, 65, of Nahunta, died May 31, 2004, at her residence after a long illness.
A native of Brantley County, she was the daughter of the late Seward E. Steedley and Dorothy Mae Harris Steedley of Nahunta.
She attended Riverside Chapel Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She also worked as a seamstress in the clothing industry for many years and graduated from Brantley County High School in 1957.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dick Westmoreland, and a brother, Julian Steedley.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her best friend, Glenn Scarborough of Tampa, Fla.; her children and their spouses, Anna Lee and Jack O?Neal and Richard A. and Amy Westmoreland, all of Jesup; six grandchildren, Angela MacKenzie, J.J. O?Neal, B.J. Witherow, Faith Witherow, Cherity Westmoreland and Alicia Jeanette Cato of Nahunta; a brother, Jimmy Steedley of Nahunta; a special friend, Kay MacNeil of Swainsboro; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held June 3 at the Chambless-Frye Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Wainright officiating.
Burial followed in the family plot at Little Buffalo Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Robert and Joseph Gary Shipes, Jim Ray Anderson, Shawn Cribbs, Bubba Little and John Holmes.
Chambless-Frye Funeral Home of Nahunta was in charge of arrangements.
