Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 30, at Pope Funeral Home in Winnsboro. Mr. Pope died on Thursday, January 27, 2011, at his home. Son of the late William Turner and Gussie Wilkes Pope, he was born on July 14, 1947, in Winnsboro. He was employed as a sales representative for NFIB and was a member of Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church in Savannah. Having been reared in rural Fairfield County, he always loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, especially turkey hunting. But most of all, Marion loved his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and loving friend.
Marion was widely known for his beautiful tenor solo voice, and music was an integral part of his life. He grew up singing in the Lebanon Presbyterian Church youth and adult choirs and won awards representing Winnsboro High School. When he and his wife Laura Jane were members of Sion Presbyterian Church, they developed a music ministry sponsored by the church, carrying the hymns of the faith to churches all over SC. The Lord blessed him with a beautiful voice and the ability to sing mightily for the Lord.
A graduate of the University of South Carolina and member of the USC Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, he studied under Dr. Arpad Daraz and Guy Hargrove and was a tenor soloist in the University Concert Choir. He later was a soloist and member of the Palmetto Master Singers, Winnsboro Choral Society, and Pine Tree Players. He sang with The Citadel Cadet Choir, his church choir, and for numerous weddings and funerals. He also led the music for presbytery lay renewals in many states.
In addition to his music-related memberships, he was active in many other organizations, a few of which are the American Pharmaceutical Association, President of USC Marketing Club, American Marketing Association, Rotary International, and Syntex Labs National Sales Counselor.
Mr. Pope is survived by his wife, Laura Jane O’Steen Pope; one son, Major Marion Turner Pope, Jr. and his wife Stephanie of Charlottesville, VA; one daughter, Frances Pope Everingham and her husband Mel of Hendersonville, NC; two stepsons, Michael Morrow and his wife Jennifer of Washington, DC, and Chase Morrow of Savannah; four grandchildren, Lawson, Camden, Ellie, and Addison; two brothers, Bill Pope and his wife Alicia of Columbia, Hennies J. Pope, Sr. and his wife Becky of Winnsboro; and two sisters, Turnice Pender and her husband Doug of Blythewood, and Mary Fulbright of Elverson, PA. He was predeceased by one brother-in-law, Sidney Fulbright.
