- Vernon Mosely Crews, 93 of Lake City, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2022 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Lake City. He was born in Olustee, Florida, September 2, 1929 to the late William M. “Will” Crews and Florence Stalvey Crews. Mr. Crews attended the Old Mason School and Columbia High School. Before joining the Army Air Force, he worked in Lake City for Hammond Dairy, Mathis Machine Shop and Witt Taxicab. While in the Air Force Vernon received training as an Aircraft Mechanic, then Crew Chief. As Crew Chief, Vernon flew with his assigned aircraft and traveled to wherever it flew, which as Vernon stated, “gave me the chance to see most of the Country, including Alaska”.
Following his service to his country, Vernon returned home and worked briefly for Bullard’s Dairy, the VA Hospital and Velda Dairy. Soon after, he began a truck driving career which lasted more than 37 years. During this span of time he drove for Central Truck Lines, ETMF Freight System and ABF Freight System. As a member of the Teamsters Union, his local affiliations included #512 in Jacksonville, FL and for 27 years, #728 in Atlanta, GA. When Vernon retired from trucking he returned home to Lake City. Mr. Crews was a member of Hopeful Baptist Church and a past member of Southside Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Vernon Dale Crews; two brothers, John Paul and William “Cotton” Crews; and two sisters, Barbara O’Steen and Louise Clements.
Survivors include his two children, Garry Crews (Kimberly Sadler), Jacksonville and Vickey Blake (Lonnie), Carrollton, GA; seven grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
