- Roger Curtis Pursley
Roger Curtis Pursley, 85, of Lake City, Florida, went to be with the Lord on September 15, 2009, Haven Hospice Care Center. He was born in Baltimore, MD to Jessie Curtis Pursley & Julia Mann Pursley. As a very young child he went to live with his grand parents in Clifton Forge, VA.
Overcoming many obstacles and personal tragedy he graduated top of his class from Eagle Rock High School, Virginia in 1941.
He served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps. in the 1st Infantry Division in the Pacific Theatre of Operations and Guadalcanal from 1941 to 1944.
He married Bertie Mae Dicks in Washington, D.C. and they lived a life of commitment to each other for 64 years.
After being discharged from the USMC they moved back to make their home in Lake City. He worked as a radio communications technician for 30 years with the Florida Forestry Service, retiring in December 1978.
Until his declining health, he was a faithful member of Hopeful Baptist Church and for years taught Sunday School and wherever a need arose, he assisted. He humbly served the Lord each day of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Bertie Mae, his son and daughter in law, Roger & Janice Pursley of Tallahassee; granddaughters, Vanessa (Jason) Keen of Vero Beach, and Allison (Todd) Carter of Tallahassee; four great grandchildren, Preston, Peyton, and Paige Keen of Vero Beach, and Lauren Carter of Tallahassee; sister, June Mollenhauer and four half brothers, John, Jess, Joe, and Champ Pursley, & many other family and friends.
Funeral Services for Mr. Roger Pursley will be conducted on Friday, September 18, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at Hopeful Baptist Church with Dr. Rodney Baker and Rev. Scott Stanland officiating.
Interment will follow in Hopeful Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2009 from 5 ? 7 P.M. at the Funeral Home.
