BARNWELL - Dorothy "Dottie" Wilkes McEwen Treadaway passed away at her home in Barnwell, SC, November 22, 2010, surrounded by her family and friends. She was 83. Dottie was born in Chester County, SC, and resided in Mint Hill, NC, for over 55 years. She was a seventh generation South Carolinian.
Dottie was predeceased by her parents, Mary Kluttz and Robert Walker Wilkes of Chester, SC; and her former husband, Raymond Jack McEwen of Mint Hill.
She is survived by her husband, Bruce S. Treadaway of Fort Mill, SC; sons, Samuel Robert McEwen and wife Robyn of Leesville, SC, and Raymond Jack McEwen Jr. and wife, Debbie, of Barnwell; grandchildren, Samuel Robert McEwen Jr., Ashlyn Taylor McEwen, Brett Wilkes McEwen, Raymond Jack McEwen III and Nicholas Carroll McEwen; sisters, Mary Wilkes and husband, Robert F. James, of Charlotte, Eliza Wilkes Means of Sunset Beach, NC; and brother, Robert Walker Wilkes Jr. and wife, Catherine, of Chester; nephews, James Dowd McEwen and wife, Janice, of Mint Hill, Charles E. Means of Richmond, VA, and Robert F. James II and wife, Verice, of Charlotte; nieces, Carmen Hatley of Charlotte, Rosemary McKnight of Richmond, Suzanne Haslam and husband, John, of Charlotte; and Robbie Wilkes of Chester.
Dottie graduated from Chester High School and King's Business College. She was formerly employed by Buick Motor Division's Zone Office and by the General Electric Corporation. She was a member of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in Mint Hill and was a member and past president of the church choir. Most recently, Dottie was a member of the Dave Harris Sunday School Class at Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Charlotte. She was an outstanding artist and painter. Dottie loved to cook and can vegetables from her garden and she regularly competed with her neighbors for the season's first ripe tomato.
The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to her caregivers, Mary Beth Creech, Gloria Walker, Willie Mae Walker, Thomas Ann Elmore, Bernice Butler and Donna Pickelsainer of Barnwell; and to the staff of the Barnwell Rehabilitation Facility.
Visitation will be held at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, on Friday, November 26, 2010, from 12:00 until 1:30 pm. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in Sunset Memory Gardens in Mint Hill.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, 11501 Bain School Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227.
