Deceased Name: Ida Mae Wilkes
Ida Mae Wilkes of Cullowhee's Speedwell Community died at her home on Thursday, April 12, 2012, surrounded by family members.
A native of Jackson County she was born April 8, 1927, to Zollie and Florence Fox. An active member of Speedwell Baptist Church, she served as church clerk for 53 years as well as Sunday school teacher and Vacation Bible School coordinator. She was a choir member and sang with several gospel quartet groups.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years Charles Alden "Pete" Wilkes just eight months ago, as well as three brothers, George Haskett, J.R. Haskett and Sammy Dee Fox.
She is survived by four children, Linda Haney (Lamar), Elaine Haskett (Roy), Lenn Wilkes (Dana) and Marvin Wilkes, all of Cullowhee; also eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday April 15, 2012 at Speedwell Baptist Church with the Revs. Roger Stewman, Clemmey Queen and Justin Hunt officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Visitation was from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at Appalachian Funeral Services.
