- James David McRae, age 57, slipped gently away on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 with his family by his side. David was born on June 26, 1953 to the late Clay O. McRae and Alma Williams McRae.
Survivors include David’s son, Ashley N. McRae of Columbia, S.C., Ashley’s mother, Ann Jones McRae, brother Ed McRae of Hope Mills, and sister Martha M. Herndon of Hamlet. Also surviving are nephews, Steve McRae and Ann of Graham, N.C., and Michael McRae and Patty of Hope Mills, N.C. Nieces include Catherine Luckenbaugh and George of Charlotte, N.C., Kristi Wagers and Jay of Ellerbe, N.C. and Mica Way and Michael of Hamlet. There are also a number of great nieces and great nephews from ages 5 years to 15 years, all of whom he loved.
David will be remembered for his pretty blue eyes, sweet smile and the best hugs ever. To know David was to love him. David loved nature. He loved being in the woods behind his home, especially when Ash was by his side. They were the very best of buddies.
We are very proud of David and the way that he fought to the end his battle with pancreatic cancer. He hardly ever complained and he didn’t demand a lot of attention as he quietly battled his illness. He had a strong will to live, but at the same time, he was also prepared to leave his earthly home.
David enjoyed NASCAR racing, finding a great bargain at the flea market, Andy Griffith re-runs on channel 56 and cooking on the grill. He loved Thanksgiving which meant food, fun, football, and family. David took great care in preparing the Thanksgiving turkey with his special seasonings and would carefully deep fry the turkey until golden brown. Delicious! Dinner was followed by backyard football. It was a happy, fun day for everyone.
Thank you, David, for being the best brother, father, and friend. We will always remember your motto, “Be good and do right.”
Visitation will be held at Watson-King Funeral Home in Hamlet on Thursday, from 6 pm- 8pm. A memorial service for David will be held on Friday, Aug. 27th at 4:00 pm at Marks Creek Presbyterian Church, Hamlet. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to Hospice of Richmond County and especially to Jenneá, David’s Hospice nurse, for her tender care, her love and support to our family and to our loved one.
If you would choose to make a memorial to David, the family would suggest Hospice of Richmond County or the Marks Creek Presbyterian Church Landscaping Fund.
The family will be at David’s home, 677 Wiregrass Rd., Hamlet.
