- Julia Wilkes Hungerpiller, 88, of Winnsboro passed away on Monday, April 11, 2022. Born in Winnsboro, she was the daughter of the late Martin Yongue and Lucille Acker Wilkes.
Julia is survived by her four daughters, Chris H. Blackwelder (Joe), Kathy H. McGarity, Fran H. Walter (Don), and Connie H. Haynes (John); two brothers, Joe A. Wilkes, and Carl E. Wilkes; sister-in-law, Tiki Wilkes; nine grandchildren, Magen B. Carney (John), Justin Blackwelder (Coleman), Whitney Langley (August), Richard Walter (Lindsay), Paul Swearingen (Amanda), Geoffrey Swearingen (Jamie), Adam Swearingen (Crystal), Patrick Swearingen (Ashley),and John Swearingen; and fifteen great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Emmett Samuel Hungerpiller, Jr., Julia is predeceased by a brother, Martin Wilkes, Jr., and grandson, Christian Philip Walter.
Until her later years, Julia was active in her church, Winnsboro First Baptist, where she served in the Women’s Auxiliary Union and the church choir. She was instrumental in the reviving of the Fairfield Community Food Bank in 1984 and worked there for 30 years. She received many awards for her volunteer work including the Henry W. Castles Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award from the American Red Cross and the Paul Harris Fellow Award from Rotary International, and several other volunteer awards from the Red Cross.
Funeral services will be held at 11 o’clock AM Thursday, April 14, 2022, at Winnsboro First Baptist Church conducted by Reverend Craig Bailey. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, Hudson Street Ext., Winnsboro. The family will receive friends after the committal by the graveside.
The family would thank Julia’s many caregivers, especially Aubrey Shirley.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fairfield County Food Bank, 100 US Highway 321 Bypass S. Winnsboro, SC 29180.
