- Denver F. Dicks, 91, died May 6, 2018 at his residence in Lake City, Florida. Denver was born on December 27th, 1926 in what was then Union County at a home always referred to as the” Dan Knight Place.” He was the 6th child of Thomas and Georgia Johns Dicks. He was the last remaining grandchild of Joseph and Sarah Taylor Dicks who were historical pioneers of Columbia County.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Laverne Johnson Dicks who expired in July, 2009. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Maine, Thomas, Spain, and Boston, as well as sisters Cincinnati and Alabama.
Denver lived in Baker County from a young age. In 1945, he was drafted out of his high school senior year into the US Army, 740th Tank Battalion, B Company. Following discharge, he married Laverne and pursued various jobs before beginning a successful career as an agent for Liberty National Life Insurance Co. He served 28 years and achieved the status of Honorary Agent and Torch Club many times before retiring in 1986.
Denver was baptized as an adult and was presently a member of the Orchard Community Church. He previously was a member of First Baptist and Eastside Baptist of Lake City. He was a Master Mason with over 50 years of service and a member of Corinth Lodge Number 93 of Suwannee County at the time of his death. He was one of the original founders of the local Dicks Reunion.
Survivors include daughters Lane Dicks Dekle (George R. Bob) of Lake City, and Joan Dicks Taylor (Benny) of Live Oak, Florida. In addition, grandchildren Laura Lane Dekle, George R Dekle (Anisa), John Thomas Dekle (Jamie), Brandy Taylor Patton (Phillip), and Melissa Taylor Spurlock (Pete). Ten great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Visitation for Mr. Dicks will be held Friday, May 11, 5 to 7 PM at Gateway-Forest Lawn Funeral Home, 3596 S US Highway 441, Lake City, Fla. 32025.
Service will be held on Saturday in the chapel, 10AM. Burial to follow at Macedonia Cemetery, Macclenny, Florida. Pastor Eddie Blalock will officiate with Pastor Chip Parker assisting.
The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to : Orchard Community Church, South Ridge, 162 Ridge St., Lake City, Fla 32024.
