- Asheville - B.J. McCartin's life journey ended peacefully on May 28, 2015. BJ is survived by her three children and their families: Mynde, Keith and Makenzy Mull; Pamela Heath Saunders, Chip and Cindy Saunders; Grandchildren: Harold T. Saunders, III; Wesley Saunders, Devin Saunders, Amanda and Tyson Bimber and Zack Shelby. BJ had one precious great granddaughter, Miss Ava Shelby Bimber.
BJ's husband, Mr. Paul McCartin, preceded her in death. Paul was the love of BJ's life; they were hopelessly in love for 30 years. Paul and BJ shared a remarkable friendship that was supportive, compassionate, soulful, joyous and fun.
Born on August 13, 1929, Betty Jean Sinclair was the 5th of 5 children and the last surviving child born to the late John Wesley Sinclair and Mary L. Wilkes. Growing up in rural Maxton, NC, BJ's early life was one of sharecropping (tobacco), fox hunts and farm living. As world wide events unfolded, BJ became a part of urbanization, the Great Depression, WW II and America's boom time of industrialization. Her life embodied the courage, spirit and determination of a world striving for rightful outcomes and compassionate, responsible living.
BJ chose nursing as her career and she maintained her license until the age of 75. While raising her family in Charlotte, NC, BJ pioneered outpatient services in the field of substance abuse. As Clinical Director at the Randolph Clinic, BJ worked to establish effective, accessible services that did not require hospitalization. This program was one of the first in the nation and was instrumental in setting the precedent for outpatient service options.
BJ was promoted to the position of Director of Substance Abuse Services of Western NC. In this capacity, BJ successfully built programs that progressively addressed the complexities of drug and alcohol addiction. BJ also led and was involved in the development of the Mountain to Sea Conference, which was a national event focusing on substance abuse within families and issues specific to women.
BJ's career was one of selflessness and compassion. She was awarded the prestigious "Order of the Long Leaf Pine", by Jim Hunt, then Governor of the State of North Carolina. She was a true leader, with a true heart. Her presence will be greatly missed among colleagues, family and friends.
BJ lived a full 85 years of life with no regrets and a heart filled with gratitude. BJ was honored and respected as a woman of conviction, acceptance and love. We will all miss our Mom, our "Gand-ma", our "Peepie" and our friend.
BJ and her family request that a small donation be made to the Arbor Day Foundation, where trees will be planted in BJ's name. Donations can easily be made by contacting their website or by phone at: 1-888-448-7337.
