- Mrs. Cleta (Hendrix) Murphy McCorkel
STATESBORO, Ga. - Mrs. Cleta Hendrix Murphy McCorkel, age 85, died on December 6th, 2010, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. Mrs. Cleta was born on April 5th, 1925, in Evans County, Ga., to the late James Alfred and Effie Powell Hendrix. She married J.E. Murphy in 1944 and in 1951 they moved to Statesboro, Ga. She was employed by Josh Lanier Jewelers for two years and then was employed by the Bulloch County Bank, which is now BB & T, from 1957 through 1965. She was then employed by Georgia Southern College, which is now Georgia Southern University, through 1978. She and J.E. moved back to Evans County to live with her mother after her father died. She worked at The Claxton Bank from 1979 through 1990. She retired from The Claxton Bank in 1990 and moved to Statesboro. She married Johnie McCorkel in 1992 and was a very happy housewife for 17+ years. Johnie died on October 9, 2009.
She was an active member of the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Cora Williams Circle. She was a devoted and loving, wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Cleta loved caring for her family because they were her main focus. She was an avid gardener who spent countless hours tending to her flowers and garden. She was also preceded in death by her two brothers, Aubrey and Archie Hendrix.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Billy Lane of Statesboro, Latrelle and Ken Watkins of Texas; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Charlotte and Dennis Edwards of Register, Ga.; four grandchildren, Susanne and Joey Maxwell, John and Simone Lane of Statesboro, Jason Lane of Atlanta, Ga., and Russell and Judi Jo Adams of Oklahoma; two step grandsons, Gary and Debbie Edwards and John and Rachel Edwards of Statesboro; seven great-grandchildren Chandler, Julia Ann and Victoria Maxwell, Brittany and John Daniel Lane, John Wesley and Evan Andrew Adams; one step great-grandchild, Peyton Edwards; four brothers, Hubert, Delmas, Sammy Hendrix and Jim Hendrix Jr. of Claxton, Ga.; and a sister-in-law, Oveta Hendrix of Claxton.
The visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-7 p.m. at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
The funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Randy Waters officiating. The body will lie-in-state at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ladies Fellowship Sunday School Class and the Cora Williams Circle.
