3915 Michael Richard Stewart

Daily News, The (Longview, WA) - Saturday, January 19, 2019

Nov. 3, 1951 - Jan. 12, 2019

It is with great sadness the family of Michael Richard Stewart announces his passing on Jan. 12, 2019, at the age of 67.

He was born Nov. 3, 1951, in Sylvania, Ga. In 1979, as a newlywed with two young daughters in the backseat of an Oldsmobile Cutlass, he headed on a cross-country adventure to Longview, where he planned to work at the NORPAC paper mill for just a few months. Instead, he stayed for 35 years and either worked on, built, or designed just about every piece of machinery in the plant. He was a mechanically gifted CAD design engineer, largely self-taught, who translated his ideas onto paper and loved to see his machines come to life.

When he wasn't building things at work, he was creating one of his patented masterpieces in his shop at home. While he tinkered in the shop, his girls were often there, getting some lessons in welding or mechanics, and being constantly reminded that they could be anything they wanted when they grew up. To his daughters, he was larger than life. He could build or fix anything, and it always seemed there was something to fix: his bike on the Seattle to Portland bike ride he rode with his brother, a snowmobile that would never cooperate during trips to Mt. Hood, or the motorhome that broke down during one of the family's many cross-country road trips.

Mike was a proud father-in-law to the two sons he never had. They bonded over a common passion for trucks, motorcycles and anything with an engine. He loved spending time with his four grandsons, who are still in awe of the most technically perfect paper airplanes a grandpa ever built.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lois (Powell) Stewart. He is survived by his daughters, Stephanie Quiett (David) of Redmond, Ore., and Kristel Turner (Zach) of Ridgefield, Wash.; a brother, Donald Stewart (Lorna) of Sydney, Australia; a sister, Linda Swint of Appling, Ga.; his grandsons, Gunnar, Hunter, Mason and Marshal; two nephews; two nieces; and though divorced at the time of his passing, his spouse of 40 years, Edna Griffin.

"As you go away, along with you goes a part of me… but I am happy that now you are free."

A private service will be held for family. Condolences may be left at www.anewtradition.com/obituaries.
