    James A. Woodard Sr., 91, of Hawthorne, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, following an extended illness.

    He was a native of St. Albans, W.Va., and had been a resident of Hawthorne for the past 28 years, coming from Jacksonville. He was a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., where he played football and earned a degree in chemistry. Following graduation during WW II, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he served as a Seabee in the Asiatic Theatre, including Iwo Jima. He was a supervisor with the U.S. Postal Service retiring from Jacksonville following 10 years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Interlachen, where he was a deacon. He enjoyed his friends, outdoor activities and a good crossword puzzle.

    He was preceded in death by his wife Alice Phillips Woodard; one son, Lt. Col. James A. Woodard Jr. (U.S. Army Ret.); two brothers and two sisters.

    Surviving are his wife of five years, Vivian Woodard of Palatka; one daughter, Rebecca Lee of Jacksonville; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Woodard of Bluffton, S.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Peggy Woodard of St. Albans; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Genevieve Burchett, Alice and Bill Hawley, all of St. Albans, and Emma and Bob Marcum of West Carrollton, Ohio; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be Friday, Sept. 30, at First Baptist Church in Interlachen with Rev. Ira Ramey officiating. Interment will follow with military honors bestowed by the U.S. Navy in the Hawthorne Cemetery.

    Masters Funeral Home in Interlachen is handling arrangements.

    Alice B. Woodard, 85, died Wednesday, December 2, 1998, at the home of her daughter in Jacksonville following a long illness.

    She was a native of St. Albans, W.Va., and had been a resident of Hawthorne for the past 20 years, coming from Jacksonville, where she had lived for 22 years. She was a retired stenographer. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Interlachen. She enjoyed craft work.

    She was preceded in death by a son, James A. Woodard Jr.

    She is survived by her husband of 59 years, James A. Woodard Sr. of Hawthorne; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Gregg Lee of Jacksonville; sisters, Margaret Burdette of St. Petersburg and Barbara Horton of Shepherds Town, W.Va.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

    Funeral service will be Saturday, 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Interlachen with Rev. James Roberson officiating. Burial will follow in Hawthorne Cemetery. No public calling hours are planned.
