Sergeant Major Fred. D. Black Jr. was born the first of seven children to the late Fred D. Black Sr. and Sarah Pittman on October 19, 1936, in Robeson County, N.C. He was called home on Easter Sunday morning, March 31, 2013.

Fred married his elementary school sweetheart, Barbara Jean Harris, and to this union four children were born as follows: Michael Black in Fort Bragg, N.C., Monika Black in Okinawa, Japan, Markita Black in Panama Canal Zone and Martin Black in Fort Gordon, Ga. Additionally, he was indispensable in raising his much-loved sidekick and the joy of his life, grandson, Marcus Black of Charleston.

Fred joined the United States Army, where he served for 28 years. He began his career as a paratrooper and attained the rank of sergeant major before retiring on December 12, 1982, as a WVSU professor of military science. His second career was serving as director of financial aid at West Virginia State University.

Fred accepted Christ and joined the First Baptist Church of Charleston, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. Additionally, he was a longstanding member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Iota Chapter.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Douglas Black Jr. and Sarah Pittman Black; and two brothers, Charles and James Black.

He is survived and will be deeply missed by his wife, Barbara Jean Harris Black; his four children; two grandchildren, Gabriella Black and Marcus Black; three sisters, Ann McAllister, Mildred Nichols and Shirley Young; one brother, the Rev. Melvin Black; four sisters-in-law, Hazeline Horner, Alma Black, Barbara Black and Toni Black; and a host of nieces and nephews and friends and neighbors.

Funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, April 6, at the First Baptist Church, 432 Shrewsbury St., Charleston. Burial will be in Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar.

Friends may visit the family one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

Preston Funeral Home, Charleston, is in charge of arrangements.

DURHAM -- Sarah Pittman Black, 87, of 3305 Courtland Drive, died July 19, 2006, at Duke Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 26, 2006. The funeral will be held at Mt. Olive A.M.E. Zion Church, 1515 W. Club Blvd., with the Rev. Corey Little officiating. The body will lie in state from noon to 1 p.m. and burial will follow at Beechwood Cemetery.

Surviving are three daughters, Ann B. McAllister (Milliard McAllister) and Shirley B. Young, of Durham, and Mildred B. Nichols, from Oceanside, Calif.; two sons, Fred D. Black Jr. (Barbara), of Nitro, Va., Melvin Black (Toni), of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Mary Cooper, Eula Pittman, Gloria P. Johnson; two brothers, Louis Pittman Sr. and Alton Pittman; daughter-in-law, Alma Black, of Fayetteville; one aunt, Annie Pittman, all of Red Springs; 22 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
