    FAYETTEVILLE - Mrs. Jessie Purdy Register, 93, of

    Fayetteville, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Oct. 1, 2010.

    She was born June 16, 1917, in Cornelia, Ga., to the late Andrew Lafayette Purdy and Nell Imogene Patterson. Jessie moved to Fayetteville with her family on her 10th birthday in 1927. She graduated from Fayetteville High School and in her senior year was voted "most athletic." Jessie managed the family business, Ideal Barber Shop & Kue Pee Beauty Shop, located at 103 Green St. near Market Square. On Dec. 23, 1939, she married Henry Gordon Register, who was employed by Swift & Co. They were members of First Baptist Church and later became charter members of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church. During his career with Swift and Co., Mr. Register was transferred in 1952 to Lynchburg, Va., in 1954 to Charlotte, in 1957 to Rocky Mount, and in 1959 to Wilson. He returned home to Fayetteville in 1988. Jessie was a member of Eastern Star for more than 50 years, and was also a member of White Shrine, Lionesses and United Daughters of the Confederacy. Her volunteer work included Meals on Wheels, hospital volunteer and a volunteer at the School for the Blind. Her passions in life included church, family, friends, traveling, reading, playing bridge and history.

    Jessie was preceded in death by her husband; and two siblings, Agnes Calhoun and Helen Riddle.

    She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughters, Gail Register Daws and husband Bruce, and Julie Register Smigiel and husband Alan; and five grandchildren, LouEllen Parker Brademan and husband Royce, James Brian Parker and wife Debbie, Ryan Alan Smigiel and wife Dana, Justin Gordon Smigiel and wife Kate and Juilianne Smigiel Ottersbach and husband Mike. She also leaves behind six great-grandchildren, Cole James Parker, Olin Andrew Parker, Brooke Michelle Parker, Eleanor Gayle Brademan, Daley John Ottersbach and Ean Michael Ottersbach.

    The family will receive friends Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the chapel of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, followed at 11 a.m. by the celebration of life service conducted by the Rev. Robbie Byrd. Jessie will be laid to rest alongside her husband, the late Henry Gordon Register, in a private family ceremony at Lafayette Memorial Park.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, 701 Westmont Drive, Fayetteville, NC 28305.

    Her love and loyalty to family and friends and her faithful Christian virtues have defined her well-spent life and are a shining example for all to follow. "To live in the hearts of those we love is not to die!"
