Assuming Samuel Sumner Wilde is the father of Maxey Millan Wildes (formerly James Wilde), then our direct ancestors include five passengers from the Mayflower: William and Alice Mullins, their daughter Priscilla Mullins, Myles Standish, and John Alden. Later John and Priscilla married, producing tens of millions of descendants.

John and Priscilla Alden were second great-grandparents to President John Adams and third great-grandparents to President John Quincy Adams. Their descendants also include former Vice-President Dan Quayle and poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who wrote the famous poem "The Courtship of Myles Standish."

The Aldens were third great-grandparents and Myles and Barbara Standish were third great-grandparents to Samuel Sumner Wilde. His father Daniel Wilde married Sarah Staples through whom the Mayflower lineage can be traced.

I hope to use this web site as an ongoing update to my 1986 report on an 1820 letter supposedly written by Richard Henry Wilde to Samuel Sumner Wilde, appealing to him to be reconciled to his son James who had changed his name to Maxey Millan Wildes. Samuel Sumner Wilde had disowned James when he refused to follow his father's occupation as a lawyer and married someone of whom his father disapproved, according to this letter.

As I stated in 1986, the strongest evidence I found to back up the claims in this letter is that one older boy matching the age range of Maxey Millan Wildes was living in the household of Samuel Sumner and Eunice Cobb Wilde during the 1800 and 1810 Census. By the 1820 Census, he was gone. That fact matches the information in Richard Henry Wilde's letter, informing Samuel Sumner Wilde that his son and wife had been living with he and his family in Georgia since 1817.

Although I have not been able to locate the original 1820 letter, many of the facts can be verified in other sources. For example, Richard Henry Wilde mentions Eunice as being the name of James (Maxey Millan)'s mother, which is correct. She was one of the daughters of General David Cobb, whose history is explored on another page on this web site.

Maximillan married Sarah Elizabeth Wilkerson in 1821. Sarah (daughter of Living and Living) was born in 1805 in Ware, Georgia, USA; died on 22 Jul 1838 in Ware, Georgia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
