    Obituary

    Adeline Wood Wilkes 1926 - 2011

Adeline Wilkes, 85, passed away Monday, November 14, 2011 from complications after emergency surgery. She was surrounded by her loving family at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by two sisters, four children, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home on Timberlane Road Saturday, November 19 at 12:00 pm.

Adeline grew up in the North Georgia Mountains that she dearly loved. She attended Wesleyan College where she was Valedictorian majoring in English. She married Judson Wilkes, Jr. and moved to Adel, Georgia where all of her children were born. After Judson's death she moved the family to Thomasville, Georgia and then to Tallahassee where she was a student and librarian at Florida State University. Adeline earned a Ph.D. in Library Science from FSU at age 57 while teaching and working as the Library Science Librarian. She later accepted a faculty position at Texas Woman's University where she achieved the title of Professor Emerita before retiring in 1998. She returned to Tallahassee and devoted much of her retirement years to her passion for painting. Her work was accepted in galleries in Tallahassee (Senior Center, Mary Brogan LeMoyne), Quincy (The Gadsden Art Center), Thomasville, Valdosta, Moultrie, Ft. Walton Beach, Camilla, and Live Oak. Her awards include a "Best of Show", "First Place", as well as several lesser recognitions. She most enjoyed painting scenes from nature, trying to capture the beauty of colors and shapes and especially the light and shadows that occur naturally. She was an active member of the Tallahassee Senior Center Art Council, The Tallahassee Watercolor Society, The Taoist Tai Chi Society, and held numerous other volunteer positions.

Adeline touched the lives of many people. Her many friends, students, colleagues, and especially her family will cherish the memory of a headstrong woman who never faltered even in the face of great adversity. She will be interred in Adel, Georgia with her devoted husband Judson.

    We will miss you Mama.

In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Adeline can be made to the Tallahassee Senior Center, 1400 North Monroe Street, Tallahassee, FL 32303.

Arrangements are under the direction of Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, Tallahassee, FL.
