    Mrs. Bessie Elizabeth Wiggins WILKES, 85, of Lake City, died early Monday morning, September 24, 2001, in the Lake City Medical Center following a brief illness.

    A native of Waycross, Georgia, Mrs. Wilkes was educated and graduated from the school system in Waycross prior to moving to Lake City in 1939. Mrs. Wilkes served as the secretary of the First Baptist Church of Lake City for forty-five years. She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church and in the Charity Sunday School Class, the Wednesday Night Supper Committee and the Historical Committee of the church. Mrs. Wilkes was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

    Mrs. Wilkes was preceded in death in 1985 by her husband of forty-four years, Mr. Air N. WILKES.

    Mrs. Wilkes is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles & Joanne WILKES, Columbia, South Carolina; John & Patty WILKES, Robbinsville, North Carolina; a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia & Robert JOLLY, Hickory, North Carolina; a brother Charles WIGGINS (Terry), Sebring, Florida; and a sister, Mrs. Ruby DECKER of Fort Myers, Florida, Six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Wilkes will be conducted at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 26, 2001, in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Carson Brittain, Rev. Robert Davis and Rev. Troy Varnum officiating.

    Interment will follow in Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

    Arrangements are under the direction of the Biggs Funeral Home, 3801 S. First Street, Lake City.
