One of oldest Citizens Passes Away this Week
Mr. E. Wilkes, age 83, one of the oldest citizens of this county, died at the home of his son, H.G. Wilkes, in Wheeler County, Tuesday, March 24th, after an illness of five weeks, as a result of a fall. He died the day after his 83rd birthday.
Mr. Wilkes was born and reared in Laurens County, the son of Elisha and Elizabeth Gay Wilkes, and was married to Miss Corine McLendon near Rockledge, in Laurens County, in 1873.
He came to Montgomery, now Wheeler County, about 35 years ago, and engaged in farming near Erick, where he reared a large family. Later on, becoming disabled for work, on account of his advanced age, he moved to this county, where he resided until his death.
Mr. Wilkes was an honorable upright citizen, a member of the Methodist Church, and was loyal and true to his friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held at the Erick Christian Church, Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C.L. Wall, pastor of Helena Methodist church, and interement was made in the Erick Cemetery. The pall bearers were; His grand-sons, E.M. Wilkes, Jr., Fred Wilkes, Tom Wilkes, Leon Wilkes, Russell and Ottis Wilkes.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. S.B. Wiggins, of Palm Harbor, Fla., and seven sons, Millard of Columbus, Ga., John of Largo, Fla., Rev. N.C. of Austell, Ga., H.G. of Wheeler County, E.M., Grover C., and Sam J.Wilkes of Telfair and a number of grand-children.

Portions of a letter written to my sister Lola Jean Wilkes Hill 1932-1993 from Corene Wilkes Walton dated 27 Sept. 1987.
Dear Cousin Lola,
Mother and daddy were third cousins. A cousin of mine on mothers side told me that 4 wilkes brothers left North Carolina and settled in Laurens Co. near Rockledge. Mothers grandfather was one of them. He donated an acre of land for a Wilkes Cemetery, which is now Mount Zion near Rockledge Ga.
Uncle Henry married Louella, Mothers sister about 1917. When the 1918 flu was so bad she waited on our family. She caught the flu and died. She also had a miscarriage. Shortly after, Henry married Zella Avant who is the mother of Henrys 3 children.
My grandmother Wilkes's name, I've heard was: Annie Eliza Harriet Coreen McLendon Wilkes. I changed the way I spell Coreen to Corene because I spelled it that way on all my school records.
My father was nice looking. Since you are interested enough to write this history I gathered up some extra pictures of four generations to send you. Jim Wilkes has one son, Jason.

Below is a letter written to my sister Lola Jean Wilkes Hill (1932-1993) from Gussie Mae Stapelton b 17 May 1906 in Brooks Co. Ga., married 20 Aug. 1926 in Douglas Ga.
Gussie Mae's Grandmother Cemantha E. Davis ( sister of Chlorene McLendon) married Wm. Jasper and divorced and married Pollard McLendon.
Cemantha E. Davis was born 30 Dec 1855 in Montgomery, Georgia, USA died 14 Feb. 1933. Her parents were Thomas Andria Davis and Cemanthy McLendon.
The letter follows
"I went and visited your uncle Elisha (greatuncle) and Aunt Lavanna about Sept or Oct in 1952 and while talking to them your uncle Elish told me that his mother Corene Wilkes "had no home father" that was the way he put it, but he also told me that Harrison McLendon was a son of Eliza McLendon that she had Harrison a son and Daughters, Cloa, Sophia, Elizabeth. Martha and Corene born in 1856. Elizabeth or Betsy Married a Smith. The parents of Calvin Columbur Smith who resided in Telfair Co. Ga before and up untill he died in the 1920's or 30's. Eliza McLendon was the sister of my great grandmother Cemanthy McLendon who married Thomas Andrews davis you mentioned the name Mariah. (next word unreadable)..Record is Eliza Cemanth McLendon on Davis: also had brother Pollard who married Liza Thigpen and their son Pollard married my grandma Cemantha elizabeth Davis second marrage. Clemantha E. Married 1st my Grandfather Wm. Jasper Stapleton.
Ephriums children were John, Rowena, or Roasein, Mollie, Isaac, Dock, Dennis, Sallie and sister.
Elisha gave me this information from memory I always knew there was a connection of relationship but no one ever told me about a couple of years ago I had a letter from my brother and he told me that your uncle Millard Wilkes I believe is was told him at one time that his mother was the daughter of Thomas Andrew Davis and I have no reason to doubt that for it is said that he was a ladys man and was very wealthy and influential so I pass it on to you as I received it. Those were terrible times in and around the civil was and wer not isolated experienses.

Dear Lola, I was talking by phone to my sister, Evelyn English, last week. She was born in 1915 and can remember way back when mother used to tote her around. She never heard Coreen's mother's name. She did remember about 1925 when we lived in Treutlen Co. Ga., that after church, a man called "Tricky" Tom Davis, told us he was kin to us. He said he was our grandma Coreen's half-brother. We didn't know how that could be true if he was a Davis and she a McLendon. Mother explained it to us when daddy was not around.
Grandma Coreen had a sister Martha, a sister Chloie and a brother Harrison. So Mariah must have had 4 children in all.
I mostly remember Grandma Coreen sitting by the fireplace in a straight chair, with a cow hide bottom, that sagged about 4 or 5 inches, smoking a corn cob pipe. She had asthma and sniffed warm salty water up her nose to clear her head out. These grandparents lived in the house with us about 6 months. With 8 noisy children around, they soon m
